Sorry to complain, but for years, "Latest Posts" worked well to get around.
This is....icky.

This thread by John Robinson might help.
Beta Release - Tue Mar 19, 2002
Today's updated software includes:
Merge "Latest Threads/Latest Posts" (later renamed "Threads/Comments") into one "Latest Posts" link. "Latest Posts" now defaults to either Threads or Comments depending on your last view. You can toggle the view between Threads/Comments anytime; and if you are logged in the setting will be remembered.
This new link has been copied through-out the site.
The timestamp has been removed from the forums list. If you are logged in, it now remembers the last time you visited and shows the Forums in bold if there are new messages. It also shows in italics private forums that you can access, and places a blue or red star next to the name if you are a member or moderator of the forum.
And yes, when you click a forum it will go to either the threads or comments view of Latest Posts, depending on your last setting.
And there were a large number of changes under the hood.

"How does one become a Forum Member? What's up with that?" Better Question: How do I Log in? seems I can't :-)
To: SkyPilot
Sad to say, I don't like it either.

There is a "Show brief" link on the top...maybe it switched to "Show Full" on accident?

It also shows in italics private forums that you can access, and places a blue or red star next to the name if you are a member or moderator of the forum.I can't figure out the purpose of this feature.
Right now I can access any of the new forums.
Is this a prelude to some kind of exclusivity where only certain FReepers can access certain forums?

as I said on another thread
If it aint broke, ENHANCE IT.
Never tell a programmer that his software is fine, it never is.

I've been playing around with it for a while, and here is what I am finding:
- The behavior of the "Latest Posts" links is configurable. When the page loads, there is a link that says "Showing Articles Only. Click here to view Articles and Comments." Clicking that toggles it so that "Latest Posts" will show articles AND replies. Or the link might say "Showing Articles and Comments. Click here to view Articles Only.", and then clicking it will make the latest posts links give only the articles.
- On the bottom of each thread there is a link for "Settings". You can make it so that the self-search shows the full reply or just who/what thread.
- The "My Preferences" page is working again it appears. On the drop down box available from the "Latest Posts" page, you can choose it. In there, it allows you to toggle on and off various sidebars, set how many words of an article show up on the latest posts page (so you can see some of an article without actually opening it), how many articles to put on a listing page, and if an article should be opened in a new window, the same window, or a dedicated window.
I am sure there are more things either new or fixed that I haven't come across yet.

One can continue to improve software until it becomes useless.
The current version is almost bad enough to deserve a "software achievement award."

I'm hoping that I'll login one morning and there'll be an "InvisibleChurch" button.

Before the Framers gave us the Constitution, we had the Articles of Confederation......of course, change is necessary History suggests that a very good argument can be made that the change from the Articles to the Constitution did not advance the cause of freedom, does it not?
I preferred seeing many headlines on a page. In fact I had considered asking for the font to made smaller so that more headlines per page were viewable. But like many Americans, for the past two hundred years, I must learn to content myself with what I get.

I think the new software is "fabulous" (trademark).
The only suggestions I have for John are to: (1) move the sidebar to the left side and (2) transfer the Keyes threads to General Interest.

Hmmm...wonder if you can have Freudian typo-slips? *L*
