From my e-mail box:
A day after State Senator Patrick OMalleys campaign admitted that its key financial backer printed a grossly distorted mailing in Southern Illinois suggesting Jim Ryan supports gay marriages, the Chicago Tribune reported that recorded phone messages were blanketing the state with more lies and distortions attacking Jim Ryan.
The lies and distortions exactly mirror those being made by OMalley.
The OMalley campaign has not answered the question whether it is behind the calls.
The following message is being received in southern Illinois:
Hello, my name is Terry and I am with the Bi-Gay-and Lesbian Federation. Im calling you today to ask you to join me in supporting Jim Ryan for governor. Jim Ryan supports gay rights and was recognized for his support of gay rights by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in their endorsement of Ryan. Like you, Jim Ryan thinks sexual orientation should be included in the civil rights code of the Illinois Constitution, opening the door to gay marriages as in other states, like Vermont. On Tuesday, stand up for gay rights and vote for Jim Ryan, Republican for Governor. Thank you.
The following message is being received in northern Illinois:
Hello, my name is John Pulley and I am with IL Republicans for Honest Government. Join me in voting to clean up the corruption in state government by voting for Patrick OMalley for Governor. Recently, it has been revealed that Jim Ryan knew about the licensees for bribes scandal, but Jim Ryan chose to protect George Ryan rather than keep his promise to root out public corruption; even after 39 people were convicted and even after children died. On Tuesday say no to corruption by voting for Patrick OMalley for Governor.
Patrick OMalley must believe that a campaign is a game where truth and integrity dont matter, Ryan said.
The Southern Illinoisan reported this morning that a mailing is being distributed throughout Southern Illinois suggesting that Jim Ryan favors gay marriages. The article points out that Jim Ryan does not favor gay marriages.
OMalleys campaign cant even shoot straight on who was behind the mailing.
A spokesman told the Southern Illinoisan that the mailing was produced by Family Taxpayers Network headed by Jack Roeser, a man who has poured nearly $500,000 into OMalleys campaign. Roeser denied being responsible for the mailing in both the Southern Illinoisan and Chicago Tribune.
Roeser and OMalley have unleashed a blitz of mail pieces riddled with false statements about Jim Ryan.
Among the lies:
Jim Ryan supports gay marriages. FALSE. Jim Ryan has always opposed gay marriages.
OMalley continues to state Jim Ryan never formed a public corruption unit in his office. FALSE. The unit was formed and 35 public officials have been convicted of various crimes.
OMalley claims Jim Ryan looked the other way on George Ryan corruption.
AN ABSOLUTE LIE. A federal investigation into corruption was underway that ultimately led to dozens of convictions. A responsible state law enforcement agency would never conduct a parallel investigation on the same set of facts. OMalley claims that a federal investigation was not underway at the time and the proof he offers: That George Ryan said so.
OMalley claims in a mailing that Jim Ryan would not ban live birth abortions. FALSE. Jim Ryan supports the ban.
OMalley claims that Jim Ryan favors an expansion of gambling. FALSE. Jim Ryan opposes an expansion of gambling.
OMalley claims that Jim Ryan would not reign in George Ryans runaway spending. FALSE. Jim Ryan has talked continually about fiscal discipline and has outlined a detailed plan to achieve it. OMalley makes the claim despite gladly taking $9 million in member pork, including $1 million to buy a municipal golf course. OMalley also supported a measure to lift tax caps, which amounted to a $389 million tax increase.
OMalley continues to say that two defendants in a civil lawsuit Jim Ryan filed against Life Education Center were frequent campaign contributors. FALSE. Neither ever gave the campaign any money.
OMalleys new campaign ad is an outrageous lie, falsely tying Jim Ryan to the license-for-bribes scandal. The ad includes a photo of Jim Ryans head and body where Jim Ryans head is suddenly removed.
Ryans other opponent, Corinne Wood, is also running a false ad, alleging kickbacks and shake downs. That ad has been denounced by former Gov. Jim Edgar, state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka and Congressman Henry Hyde. Hyde described the ad as a new low in negative advertising.
I'm a Reagan Eleventh Commandment Republican. I'm not a pollyanna when it comes to party infighting, but I don't cotton to over-the-edge, ugly tactics coming from ANY candidate in a Republican party primary. There was and is a reason for President Reagan's Eleventh Commandment.
If I still lived in Illinois and as a conservative, I would cast my vote for Mr. O'Malley in the primary and then support either him or Ryan in the general election. The governorship in this important state must not fall into DemoRAT hands.

I say it's time to clean house in The Land of Lincoln!
People widely misinterpret the 11th commandment. It actually meant that no elected Republican will take sides in a primary. It has nothing to do with maligning each other. In fact, in an election where you are going for the same kind of voters, you will have to distance yourself sufficiently from the other guy in order to win the support of the people you are vying for. I am not sure in this case Omalley is smearing Jim Ryan, he is simply pointing out some undeniable truths.
Secondly, while he doesn't DIRECTLY support "gay marriage", per say, if this "equal rights" bill is passed, it will apply under any circumstance. Gays couples could therefore sue when they are denied the same "right" as hetrosexual couples have-- getting at the very least, the right to a "civil union" (like Vermont!) And they would have every right to sue the way the bill is worded. It does not make an exception for marriage or other public ceremonies.
Finally, where exactly does it prove O'Malley ordered people to make phony calls to southern Illinoians pretending to be Jim Ryan? Did you even think that there are ALOT of people in southern Illinois who DO NOT LIKE Jim Ryan and did this outside the O'Malley camp? I've been to southern Illinois twice, and I can tell you they pull all kinds of stunts in Williamson county and especially at SIU. Remember when ol' George Ryan got hit with a pie down there? They all BLAMED it on Poshard's "bitter" campaign staff. Turned out to be some nutty green party guy.
If you really want to vote for Jim Ryan over this go ahead. But think about the what you're doing. He lost running for the general assembly in 1976, he lost to Roland Burris in 1990 in his first run for A.G., and he is EXTREMELY tainted by statewide scandals like the Cruz case and license-for-bribes. What O'Malley is saying about Jim Ryan will be a walk in the park compared to what Vallas and Blagojevic have in mind. Look at how they attack each other, LET ALONE a Republican. The Democrats are ruthless in Illinois and they already have rigged the legislature to win it back in November. I'll vote for Jim Ryan in the general election, but the fact he is he's looking more and more like the "Bob Dole" of Illinois. I warned everyone in '96 that Dole was roadkill against Clinton. O'Malley is from a heavily 'RAT district in COOK county(mine) and has NEVER lost an election against a Democrat or anyone else. Hmmm.
Better think things over.
Did you make any accurate predictions on Simon in your state of California?
I have been campaigning for Mr O'Malley for the last 6 weeks. Of the 4 diferent pieces of campaign literature available to me for distribution, only one makes any reference to Ryan's stand on abortion. Here's the line from the table:
Jim Ryan...WILL NOT...Fight to Ban Live Birth Abortions ...
This is (I believe) in reference to Ryan's lack of action in the Christ Hospital case.
Other than that, the only thing that can be construed as negative is O'Malley chastising Ryan for not being clear on his stance. And like I said before, several newspapers also made mention of Ryan's ambiguous stance.
Are you one of those guys buying the media propaganda that O'Malley is "too conservative" to win over "mainstream" voters. Interesting. I live in O'Malley's district. The only one from a "safe" Republican area in Jim Ryan.
Let me tell you a little bit about the 18th Senate district. We cover most of Worth-Palos Twp., in the southwest part of COOK County. You know, Cook, where Democrats outnumber Republican 3-1? That's us.
Our district was heavily white middle class when O'Malley first came on the scene. Today, it has a large blue-collar mixture moving and has become very racially "diverse". Oak Lawn, for instance, is heavily Arab, and the local Arab organization of Cook has endorsed him. Blue Island is about 1/3rd white, 1/3rd hispanic, and 1/3rd black. It almost NEVER votes for a Republican, let ALONE a conservative. Except Pat O'Malley. O'Malley obvious doesn't win over the area thanks to ideological agreement. He wins it over because he has done so much of the people in this district, and he's our lone safeguard against the Chicago machine trying to force their people on our suburbs.
Today, we're surrounded by liberals on three sides, and Chicago on two sides. Republicans throughout the area have lost their jobs to smooth talking "moderate" Democrats (it's quite depressing actually). But O'Malley's still standing. He's the ONLY state Senator in Illinois who's congressional district is represented by DEMOCRATS (Brosnahan on my side) for all the House districts in the area. The mayors out here are all Democrats too. Guess what? They're endorsing him over their own party's candidates too (the lone exception is Mayor Kolb) You know why? Because they too know that O'Malley gets things done for his district and wins over people across party lines, sometime a machine 'RAT like Blagojevic can never do. We're proud of our Senator, reguardless of party.
Wish you could have been here for the 2000 election. The Daley machine did EVERYTHING to get O'Malley to lose re-election. They really couldn't stand an openly pro-gun and pro-life Republican standing up against them on their home turf. These guys spent MILLIONS on some Democrat lawyer named Rick Ryan. We were bombared with flyers and TV ads everyday. Little Lisa Madigan and Daddy Mike were among the dozens of Democrats out here campaigning for him. We were even treated to out of state Democrats slinging mud at O'Malley. He was a "rich hypocrite", a "racist", a "woman-hater", a "gun-nut". They couldn't find any scandals so they'd attack his conservative voting record. The end result? O'Malley won his 3rd term with 57.9%, when the REST of the Republicans-- including George Bush-- did very poorly in southwest Cook County.
So I don't want to here the B.S. that O'Malley "can't win". Our district is probably more liberal than the state as a whole. It is Jim Ryan and Corinne Wood who live in "safe" Republican areas and are not prepared to take on the Democrats. Jim was lucky enough to get a joke opponent in 1998 and finally win by a substancial margin. Prior to that, he had one by a hair and lost two other elections. Corinne Wood bought herself an "open" house seat with NO Democrat opponent, and then was a "tag along" winner for Lt. Governor.
O'Malley's been "tested" and NEVER defeated by the 'RATs. Quite frankly, anyone who thinks he can't win is either unaware of the facts or ignorant.
If that was your experience in your home state, why do you think you call the Illinois race any better?
Making political judgments is a hobby of mine. Do you want to divest me of my hobby?
I've watched the debates and concluded that O'Malley is the only stand-up guy running.
I moderate the Bush/Cheney Yahoo Group and I have been getting some really nasty emails to moderate from O'Malley's campaign which I have been rejecting. Now I am glad I did.
I took the time to read those "nasty" e-mails. Nasty may foot!! The two you sent are nothing more than O'Malley's license-for-bribes campaign news release from a couple of days ago. You consider those too nasty to post? Unless you have other e-mails to forward, I'll conclude that your intent in posting early in the thread was to disparage O'Malley's reputation.
Indeed he is. But, he's not a Springfield insider. That's why the media ignored him when he ran for Governor in 1994. But, he sure has had an impact by forming the Conservative group - Family Taxpayers Network. http://www.thechampion.org/
