O Malley Smear Campaign Against Jim Ryan Intensifies (Illinois Governor's Race)

From my e-mail box:

A day after State Senator Patrick O’Malley’s campaign admitted that its key financial backer printed a grossly distorted mailing in Southern Illinois suggesting Jim Ryan supports gay marriages, the Chicago Tribune reported that recorded phone messages were blanketing the state with more lies and distortions attacking Jim Ryan.

The lies and distortions exactly mirror those being made by O’Malley.

The O’Malley campaign has not answered the question whether it is behind the calls.

The following message is being received in southern Illinois:

Hello, my name is Terry and I am with the Bi-Gay-and Lesbian Federation. I’m calling you today to ask you to join me in supporting Jim Ryan for governor. Jim Ryan supports gay rights and was recognized for his support of gay rights by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in their endorsement of Ryan. Like you, Jim Ryan thinks sexual orientation should be included in the civil rights code of the Illinois Constitution, opening the door to gay marriages as in other states, like Vermont. On Tuesday, stand up for gay rights and vote for Jim Ryan, Republican for Governor. Thank you.

The following message is being received in northern Illinois:

Hello, my name is John Pulley and I am with IL Republicans for Honest Government. Join me in voting to clean up the corruption in state government by voting for Patrick O’Malley for Governor. Recently, it has been revealed that Jim Ryan knew about the licensees for bribes scandal, but Jim Ryan chose to protect George Ryan rather than keep his promise to root out public corruption; even after 39 people were convicted and even after children died. On Tuesday say no to corruption by voting for Patrick O’Malley for Governor.

“Patrick O’Malley must believe that a campaign is a game where truth and integrity don’t matter,” Ryan said.

The Southern Illinoisan reported this morning that a mailing is being distributed throughout Southern Illinois suggesting that Jim Ryan favors gay marriages. The article points out that Jim Ryan does not favor gay marriages.

O’Malley’s campaign can’t even shoot straight on who was behind the mailing.

A spokesman told the Southern Illinoisan that the mailing was produced by Family Taxpayers Network headed by Jack Roeser, a man who has poured nearly $500,000 into O’Malley’s campaign. Roeser denied being responsible for the mailing in both the Southern Illinoisan and Chicago Tribune.

Roeser and O’Malley have unleashed a blitz of mail pieces riddled with false statements about Jim Ryan.

Among the lies:

• Jim Ryan supports gay marriages. FALSE. Jim Ryan has always opposed gay marriages.

• O’Malley continues to state Jim Ryan never formed a public corruption unit in his office. FALSE. The unit was formed and 35 public officials have been convicted of various crimes.

• O’Malley claims Jim Ryan looked the other way on George Ryan corruption.

AN ABSOLUTE LIE. A federal investigation into corruption was underway that ultimately led to dozens of convictions. A responsible state law enforcement agency would never conduct a parallel investigation on the same set of facts. O’Malley claims that a federal investigation was not underway at the time and the proof he offers: That George Ryan said so.

O’Malley claims in a mailing that Jim Ryan would not ban live birth abortions. FALSE. Jim Ryan supports the ban.

O’Malley claims that Jim Ryan favors an expansion of gambling. FALSE. Jim Ryan opposes an expansion of gambling.

O’Malley claims that Jim Ryan would not reign in George Ryan’s runaway spending. FALSE. Jim Ryan has talked continually about fiscal discipline and has outlined a detailed plan to achieve it. O’Malley makes the claim despite gladly taking $9 million in member pork, including $1 million to buy a municipal golf course. O’Malley also supported a measure to lift tax caps, which amounted to a $389 million tax increase.

O’Malley continues to say that two defendants in a civil lawsuit Jim Ryan filed against Life Education Center were frequent campaign contributors. FALSE. Neither ever gave the campaign any money.

O’Malley’s new campaign ad is an outrageous lie, falsely tying Jim Ryan to the license-for-bribes scandal. The ad includes a photo of Jim Ryan’s head and body where Jim Ryan’s head is suddenly removed.

Ryan’s other opponent, Corinne Wood, is also running a false ad, alleging “kickbacks” and “shake downs.” That ad has been denounced by former Gov. Jim Edgar, state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka and Congressman Henry Hyde. Hyde described the ad as a “new low in negative advertising.”

Jim Ryan is a corrupt liberal. He needs to go and if telling the voters the truth about him, so be it.

This is rotten. I live in Florida now, but Illinois born and bred. Jim Ryan was an ally of mine when I was an elected official in the Land of Lincoln. Jim is an Irish Catholic and O'Malley's smear charges about Jim's stand on abortion is disgusting.

Life is precious to Ryan who has successfully fought cancer for years, and who lost a beautiful young daughter to the same affliction a few years back.

St. Patrick must be angrily shaking his shepherd's crook right now over what O'Malley is trying to pull on a fellow Irishman and Republican.

Jim Ryan is running desperate. I don't know why, because he is sitting on a huge lead. Jim Ryan is in favor of including sexual orientation in the civil rights code of IL. His campaign people can attest to that. Jim Ryan should stop lying about himself.

I moderate the Bush/Cheney Yahoo Group and I have been getting some really nasty emails to moderate from O'Malley's campaign which I have been rejecting. Now I am glad I did.

(Even the left wingers are admitting the thought of homosexuality is detestable by using it against their opponant.)

O'Malley needs to speak on his defence of morality and family values, and ignore the left-big time! Now!
To even acknowledge them gives them more fodder--they can again attack him ,say, for being a homophobe if he denies it, or a bigot.

He needs to rise above them. They're trying to set him up for attack by forcing him to state "anti" remarks, rather than "pro"-issues. He has to keep his message all positive-all pro.
Ignoring them gives them nothing to attack. If all they have is unsupported lies , the people will see who the hate mongers are.

So much for that "gay pride" that they're always chanting about.

Sorry. I'm not from your state, and don't know either canidate. Anyone against abortion, queer marrage, is the one I support.
Sorry for the error.

Jim Ryan is no liberal. He's pro-life on abortion, for starters.

I received a mailing from the NRA, which recommended voting for O'Malley over Jim Ryan. Ryan is virulently anti-gun and will not receive my vote, or thousands of other NRA members.

As Attorney General, Jim Ryan has done nothing about Jesse Jackson's illegal shenanigans with his tax exempt front company,
Operation Push and the so-called "nonpartisan" Citizen Education Fund.
If my husband and I filed our Illinois State income taxes the way Jackson & Co. does, Jim Ryan would throw US in jail.
No, Ryan will not be getting my vote, but I BET he gets Richie Daley's.

...Jim is an Irish Catholic and O'Malley's smear charges about Jim's stand on abortion is disgusting.

Mr O'Malley is not the only one questioning Ryan's stand on abortion. Several state wide papers have noted that when push comes to shove, Ryan has been ambiguous about the issue. I don't live in Ryan's head. He may be as conservative on this issue as O'Malley is, but he has failed to convey his position to the people of Illinois. With O'Malley there is no doubt where he stands. He has the endorsements of all the major Right to Life groups. Ryan is still a mystery.

Life is precious to Ryan who has successfully fought cancer for years, and who lost a beautiful young daughter to the same affliction a few years back.

A very touching episode but it provides no defense for his lack of clarity on the right-to-life issue.

St. Patrick must be angrily shaking his shepherd's crook right now over what O'Malley is trying to pull on a fellow Irishman and Republican.

I doubt if St. Patrick is bothered too much about Illinois politics anymore. After the Daleys, and the Ryans, he's plumb tuckered out from shaking his crook.

Can you be more specific, or is this just another baseless accusation against O'Malley? Send me a copy of the e-mail. I'd like to it see for myself.
