From my e-mail box:
A day after State Senator Patrick OMalleys campaign admitted that its key financial backer printed a grossly distorted mailing in Southern Illinois suggesting Jim Ryan supports gay marriages, the Chicago Tribune reported that recorded phone messages were blanketing the state with more lies and distortions attacking Jim Ryan.
The lies and distortions exactly mirror those being made by OMalley.
The OMalley campaign has not answered the question whether it is behind the calls.
The following message is being received in southern Illinois:
Hello, my name is Terry and I am with the Bi-Gay-and Lesbian Federation. Im calling you today to ask you to join me in supporting Jim Ryan for governor. Jim Ryan supports gay rights and was recognized for his support of gay rights by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in their endorsement of Ryan. Like you, Jim Ryan thinks sexual orientation should be included in the civil rights code of the Illinois Constitution, opening the door to gay marriages as in other states, like Vermont. On Tuesday, stand up for gay rights and vote for Jim Ryan, Republican for Governor. Thank you.
The following message is being received in northern Illinois:
Hello, my name is John Pulley and I am with IL Republicans for Honest Government. Join me in voting to clean up the corruption in state government by voting for Patrick OMalley for Governor. Recently, it has been revealed that Jim Ryan knew about the licensees for bribes scandal, but Jim Ryan chose to protect George Ryan rather than keep his promise to root out public corruption; even after 39 people were convicted and even after children died. On Tuesday say no to corruption by voting for Patrick OMalley for Governor.
Patrick OMalley must believe that a campaign is a game where truth and integrity dont matter, Ryan said.
The Southern Illinoisan reported this morning that a mailing is being distributed throughout Southern Illinois suggesting that Jim Ryan favors gay marriages. The article points out that Jim Ryan does not favor gay marriages.
OMalleys campaign cant even shoot straight on who was behind the mailing.
A spokesman told the Southern Illinoisan that the mailing was produced by Family Taxpayers Network headed by Jack Roeser, a man who has poured nearly $500,000 into OMalleys campaign. Roeser denied being responsible for the mailing in both the Southern Illinoisan and Chicago Tribune.
Roeser and OMalley have unleashed a blitz of mail pieces riddled with false statements about Jim Ryan.
Among the lies:
Jim Ryan supports gay marriages. FALSE. Jim Ryan has always opposed gay marriages.
OMalley continues to state Jim Ryan never formed a public corruption unit in his office. FALSE. The unit was formed and 35 public officials have been convicted of various crimes.
OMalley claims Jim Ryan looked the other way on George Ryan corruption.
AN ABSOLUTE LIE. A federal investigation into corruption was underway that ultimately led to dozens of convictions. A responsible state law enforcement agency would never conduct a parallel investigation on the same set of facts. OMalley claims that a federal investigation was not underway at the time and the proof he offers: That George Ryan said so.
OMalley claims in a mailing that Jim Ryan would not ban live birth abortions. FALSE. Jim Ryan supports the ban.
OMalley claims that Jim Ryan favors an expansion of gambling. FALSE. Jim Ryan opposes an expansion of gambling.
OMalley claims that Jim Ryan would not reign in George Ryans runaway spending. FALSE. Jim Ryan has talked continually about fiscal discipline and has outlined a detailed plan to achieve it. OMalley makes the claim despite gladly taking $9 million in member pork, including $1 million to buy a municipal golf course. OMalley also supported a measure to lift tax caps, which amounted to a $389 million tax increase.
OMalley continues to say that two defendants in a civil lawsuit Jim Ryan filed against Life Education Center were frequent campaign contributors. FALSE. Neither ever gave the campaign any money.
OMalleys new campaign ad is an outrageous lie, falsely tying Jim Ryan to the license-for-bribes scandal. The ad includes a photo of Jim Ryans head and body where Jim Ryans head is suddenly removed.
Ryans other opponent, Corinne Wood, is also running a false ad, alleging kickbacks and shake downs. That ad has been denounced by former Gov. Jim Edgar, state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka and Congressman Henry Hyde. Hyde described the ad as a new low in negative advertising.
Go O'Malley Go!!!
Hmmm ... could that be why Fitzgerald has a 95%+ approval rating from the ACU?
And Fitzgerald (my Senator) is the *only* Senator with the balls to vote against the airline bailout after Sept. 11th, which did NOTHING to improve airline security, passenger service, or ontime performance. It was a cash-cow giveaway and Fitzgerald was the only Senator with the balls to vote against it.
You can't say that about YOUR senator, can you?
Pot, meet kettle.
This is your Senator on trying to close the gun show loophole. Take that hypocrite:
Thursday, after taking a drubbing from President Clinton, Attorney General Janet Reno, the media and many of their constituents, a dozen or so Republican Senators -- including Oregon's Gordon Smith, Illinois' Peter Fitzgerald, and Maine's Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe -- converged on the floor of the Senate. They angrily told Republican leaders that they wanted to see a Republican solution or were considering switching their votes to the Democratic proposal. Smith went so far as to complain that he had been "misled" on the vote.
You are lying about a decent man. Jim Ryan is unreservedly and undeniably pro-life. I once respected that O'Malley ran on his principles. Sadly, O'Malley has sunk to a low I never thought he'd go by making unfounded attacks on a decent man.
Maybe USCONSERVATIVE should change his name to DCCONSERVATIVE because he's certainly not a conservative by my definition.
Few are.
He may have been clear and straightforward with you, but if that's his message, then he certainly hasn't made it clear to the general public.
It's all in there...
But what makes me laugh about this whole thing is, we have two top runners slinging a little mud that throws IL Freepers into a fight. But then the most egregious is ignored... See this in the story...
The third Republican in the governor's race, Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood, has been using automated messages from author Scott Turow and feminist Gloria Steinem in an effort to gain Democratic and independent support to help her overcome a huge deficit in public opinion polls.
Republicans weren't the only ones getting telephone calls this weekend.
And Corrinne Wood is running radio ads calling for Democrats to vote for her in the primary and then "vote for whoever you want in the fall" {paraphrased}
NOW THATS DIRTY...
Senator OMalley is the principled pro-life candidate for Governor of Illinois in the March 19th Republican Primary, said Keyes. His opponent, Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan, has repeatedly refused to intervene to stop hospital infanticide.
Keyes added, Senator OMalley deserves the fervent support of all defenders of life, and truth.
I hope that the fact that you are now in the Keyes camp on the O'Malley campaign will not cause you to stop supporting this brave man.
VOTE OMALLEY!
Nominates Pat O'Malley, Republican For Governor
3/17/2002 In the three-way race on the GOP side, Attorney General Jim Ryan has maintained a huge lead from the very beginning. With plenty of money on hand and high statewide name recognition, the buttoned-down attorney general has run a low-key campaign of little substance, and shown little leadership.
Weak leadership is not what Illinois needs should the state legislature end up with two Democratic-controlled chambers. Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood is the most moderate candidate in the Republican field. Compared to Jim Ryan, she has run an aggressive campaign-- perhaps too aggressive. One-on-one, Wood is pleasant and knowledgeable. But we are uncomfortable with the extremely negative tenor of Wood's public approach, both in debate and in her advertising, and we have lingering concerns.
Wood is apparently difficult to get along with-- again, not a quality that recommends itself in a governor likely to face a legislature dominated by the opposing party. Dozens of staffers have come and gone in the revolving door the lieutenant governor's office has become during Wood's brief tenure.
One example: Corinne Wood couldn't get along with her chosen running mate, lieutenant governor candidate Bill O'Connor. O'Connor dumped her almost a month ago, and has since run an independent campaign.
And then there's Patrick O'Malley. To paraphrase a line from one of our favorite Katherine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy movies, 1948's "State of the Union," the reason politicians are professionals is because the voters are amateurs. Its classic theme is one of a good man sacrificing his ideals in order to win.
Pat O'Malley is not such a politician. He has clearly stated his views from the beginning of the campaign. He opposes abortion. He is a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights. He favors the use of school vouchers when public schools fail in their mission.
O'Malley opposed off-budget, pork-barrel "member initiative" spending, and agrees it is time for a new constitutional convention in Illinois. And as a veteran state senator, he is experienced in the levers of government and what it takes to reach consensus between opposing views. O'Malley has the educational tools, too, with both a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in finance from Purdue, to go with a law degree from John Marshall.
Further, O'Malley has been a tireless campaigner, open to the media and dedicated in his attempts to elicit straight answers from his GOP opponents-- particularly Jim Ryan.
We call that a hard-hitting approach, not negative campaigning. There's no question in our mind O'Malley has the backbone to deal with a legislature controlled by the Democrats.
This newspaper urges Southern Illinois Republicans to break with the DuPage County, pinstripe-patronage-politics wing of the Republican party that Jim Ryan represents.
The Southern endorses Patrick O'Malley for the Republican nomination for Governor.
