From my e-mail box:
A day after State Senator Patrick OMalleys campaign admitted that its key financial backer printed a grossly distorted mailing in Southern Illinois suggesting Jim Ryan supports gay marriages, the Chicago Tribune reported that recorded phone messages were blanketing the state with more lies and distortions attacking Jim Ryan.
The lies and distortions exactly mirror those being made by OMalley.
The OMalley campaign has not answered the question whether it is behind the calls.
The following message is being received in southern Illinois:
Hello, my name is Terry and I am with the Bi-Gay-and Lesbian Federation. Im calling you today to ask you to join me in supporting Jim Ryan for governor. Jim Ryan supports gay rights and was recognized for his support of gay rights by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in their endorsement of Ryan. Like you, Jim Ryan thinks sexual orientation should be included in the civil rights code of the Illinois Constitution, opening the door to gay marriages as in other states, like Vermont. On Tuesday, stand up for gay rights and vote for Jim Ryan, Republican for Governor. Thank you.
The following message is being received in northern Illinois:
Hello, my name is John Pulley and I am with IL Republicans for Honest Government. Join me in voting to clean up the corruption in state government by voting for Patrick OMalley for Governor. Recently, it has been revealed that Jim Ryan knew about the licensees for bribes scandal, but Jim Ryan chose to protect George Ryan rather than keep his promise to root out public corruption; even after 39 people were convicted and even after children died. On Tuesday say no to corruption by voting for Patrick OMalley for Governor.
Patrick OMalley must believe that a campaign is a game where truth and integrity dont matter, Ryan said.
The Southern Illinoisan reported this morning that a mailing is being distributed throughout Southern Illinois suggesting that Jim Ryan favors gay marriages. The article points out that Jim Ryan does not favor gay marriages.
OMalleys campaign cant even shoot straight on who was behind the mailing.
A spokesman told the Southern Illinoisan that the mailing was produced by Family Taxpayers Network headed by Jack Roeser, a man who has poured nearly $500,000 into OMalleys campaign. Roeser denied being responsible for the mailing in both the Southern Illinoisan and Chicago Tribune.
Roeser and OMalley have unleashed a blitz of mail pieces riddled with false statements about Jim Ryan.
Among the lies:
Jim Ryan supports gay marriages. FALSE. Jim Ryan has always opposed gay marriages.
OMalley continues to state Jim Ryan never formed a public corruption unit in his office. FALSE. The unit was formed and 35 public officials have been convicted of various crimes.
OMalley claims Jim Ryan looked the other way on George Ryan corruption.
AN ABSOLUTE LIE. A federal investigation into corruption was underway that ultimately led to dozens of convictions. A responsible state law enforcement agency would never conduct a parallel investigation on the same set of facts. OMalley claims that a federal investigation was not underway at the time and the proof he offers: That George Ryan said so.
OMalley claims in a mailing that Jim Ryan would not ban live birth abortions. FALSE. Jim Ryan supports the ban.
OMalley claims that Jim Ryan favors an expansion of gambling. FALSE. Jim Ryan opposes an expansion of gambling.
OMalley claims that Jim Ryan would not reign in George Ryans runaway spending. FALSE. Jim Ryan has talked continually about fiscal discipline and has outlined a detailed plan to achieve it. OMalley makes the claim despite gladly taking $9 million in member pork, including $1 million to buy a municipal golf course. OMalley also supported a measure to lift tax caps, which amounted to a $389 million tax increase.
OMalley continues to say that two defendants in a civil lawsuit Jim Ryan filed against Life Education Center were frequent campaign contributors. FALSE. Neither ever gave the campaign any money.
OMalleys new campaign ad is an outrageous lie, falsely tying Jim Ryan to the license-for-bribes scandal. The ad includes a photo of Jim Ryans head and body where Jim Ryans head is suddenly removed.
Ryans other opponent, Corinne Wood, is also running a false ad, alleging kickbacks and shake downs. That ad has been denounced by former Gov. Jim Edgar, state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka and Congressman Henry Hyde. Hyde described the ad as a new low in negative advertising.
Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan's Gun sting debacle
Chicago (RFM NEWS) - RFM NEWS has learned Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan postponed a press conference that would have announced a major investigation. The press conference, which would have outlined a significant Internet gun buy sting conducted by investigators from the Attorney General's office, was reportedly scheduled to take place sometime during the Spring of 2001.
According to sources close to the Attorney General's office who spoke to RFM NEWS on condition of anonymity, the Internet gun buy sting netted as many as 25 automatic and semi-automatic firearms which were sent through the U.S. mail and purchased by investigators from the AG's office.
Sources tell RFM NEWS the press conference was postponed indefinitely when lawyers for the Attorney General's office determined up until that point of the program the cases made by investigators would not have passed legal muster in a court of law. Reportedly, lawyers for the AG determined that investigators might have entrapped many of those targeted in the sting, thereby making the cases unprosecutable on constitutional grounds.
Upon learning about the legal flaws in the accumulated cases, a source said Ryan went into a tirade, demanding that staff lawyers be briefed by investigators in all future investigations.
RFM NEWS is reporting the sting operation was originally funded by the Attorney General's office itself. However, the AG eventually received a federal grant for $850,000 with the help of Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert.
More than one source within the Attorney General's office has confirmed some of the weapons obtained during the Internet sting may not be accounted for, including the necessary parts to build an automatic machine gun, which was also purchased by AG staff during the covert gun buy.
Dan Curry, press secretary for Attorney General Jim Ryan, confirmed that a press conference announcing the sting had been postponed. "We contemplated conducting a press conference but backed off when we studied the new Illinois Supreme Court rules, which prohibited our office from displaying evidence in the case," said Curry. Jim Ryan had intended to display the weapons as part of a photo op during the press conference. However, questions remain why the results of the investigation where never released to the public. Jim Ryan's office would not confirm the status of the gun buy operation and/or how much of the $850,000 has been spent on the sting and any subsequent investigations involving firearms.
Some law enforcement experts question whether the AG's office should be participating in this type of activity because such investigations usually fall under the jurisdiction of agencies more suited to the task. RFM NEWS has learned officials at the U.S. Postal Service were not pleased when they learned of the Internet gun buy sting because they were not given advance notification about the operation. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service's frustration was compounded by the fact firearms were traveling through the U.S. mail without that agency's knowledge.
In June of 2000, Jim Ryan first publicly announced his office would become more active in such investigations, when the press was informed the AG's office was pursuing three cases involving the alleged illegal sale of firearms, over the Internet and at gun shows. One such case involved a Michigan man who sold firearms over the Internet without ever seeing the individual to whom he was selling.
"Apparently the Attorney General's office was not aware they were unknowingly walking into the middle of an ongoing criminal investigation," said a source within the AG's office who preferred to be unnamed. "Our people got involved and basically compromised a good case. Ultimately, the Attorney General's Office pled the matter down, presumably to get out from under an embarrassing situation. The defendant walked away with little more than a slap on the wrist."
RFM NEWS has learned a high ranking official from the ATF in Washington, D.C. personally contacted Jim Ryan over this matter, making it clear the AG's interference in the case was not appreciated by the ATF.
According to reports, there have been circumstances when federal law enforcement has sought cooperation from the Illinois Attorney General's office without success, further compounding the friction between these agencies. RFM NEWS has learned the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) sought assistance from the Illinois Attorney General in the investigation of nearly 1,700 possible cases of the Internet being used for the procurement of child pornography. The AG reportedly refused to assist the USPIS in a project called Operation Avalanche.
Dan Curry, Jim Ryan's press secretary, would not answer repeated questions from RFM NEWS concerning the status of the Internet gun sting.

Rffmdanz@cs.com (AP) - Here are excerpts from the e-mail exchanges, obtained through the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. Israeli Galil rifle (Gresham, Ore.) Seller: "I'm not a dealer, just an honest citizen. I am however, aware that federal regulations require that if I transfer a firearm across state lines it must be transferred to a federal firearms license holder in the state of receipt. ... I can't take the risk of (ticking) off the Feds. I simply have to much to lose, wife, kids, job, house, etc. I'm sure the (federal authorities) would lock me up or at the very least fine the (deleted) out of me." AG: "I spoke to a FFL that works in the same building as I do. He said in Illinois, as long as neither of us is a FFL gun dealer all I need is a valid Fire Arms Owner Identification Card. ... I would really like to avoid the hassle and expense of going through a dealer. Why should we put money in his pocket for doing nothing but having a piece of paper?" Seller: "Thanks for your reply to my concerns about interstate firearms transfers. I must admit that I have never done this before and don't want to be liable for doing anything illegal." MAK 90 (Panama City, Fla.) Seller: "It will have to be shipped through a licensed dealer to a licensed dealer." AG: "If you are not a dealer, I believe you can ship the AK directly to me. This would cut out the expense of both of us having to pay dealers." Seller, after reading about the federal dealer rule: "I believe it means that at least I must use a fire arms dealer from my end. Do you know the laws on this?" AG: "We are both private citizens so you can sell to me directly." MAK 90 (Bartlesville, Okla.) Seller: "In checking with the local gun shop here in town the only way to sell a firearm is that it has to be sent from one FFL licensed party to another. ... I am not sure if it also applies to parts." AG: "I do not believe parts have to go through a FFL, otherwise mail order places would be out of business." Seller: "I just wanted to be legal about the transaction. ... I will ship as parts. Like you say, no FFL required on the parts." MAK 90 (Forestville, N.Y.) Seller: "I need to send it to an FFL dealer, right?" AG: "If you are not a dealer and just a private citizen, you can sell directly to me." Seller: "The only way you can send things via the mail over state lines is by sending to a valid FFL dealer. ... Sorry if this makes you change your mind, but I don't want to go to jail!" AG: "How do you feel about breaking the gun down into two parts and sending them to me that way? It is definitely not illegal to send gun parts directly to an individual." Seller: "All right. I'll break it down and send 2 packages."
Exchanges between investigators and gun sellers in Ryan sting
Jim Ryan, as Illinois' Attorney General, has gone after Jackson.
Illinois awaits Jackson tax form
By Steve Miller
THE WASHINGTON TIMES, February 27.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson's premier tax-exempt organization has not filed a state tax return for 2000 and is in danger of losing its legal authority to raise money, an official with the Illinois attorney general's office said.
"This is problematic," said Dan Anders, a spokesman for the office, which regulates tax-exempt businesses in Illinois. "The forms were due in June, and over the last eight months, we have sent notices and contacted them by phone.
"They told us a month ago that they would file, but we still don't have the forms. If they can't comply, their registration will be canceled."
He said the Citizenship Education Fund, Mr. Jackson's primary funding vehicle, is eight months delinquent in filing and has never asked for a deadline extension or explained the delay.
"They have not described to us what the problem is," Mr. Anders said.
Losing the organization's registration would cripple Mr. Jackson's empire, which includes the Wall Street Project and the International Trade Bureau. The Citizenship Education Fund provides money for Mr. Jackson's most prominent group, the for-profit Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. The coalition received $300,000 from the Citizenship Education Fund in 1999, tax records showed.

McAwful?
1. O'Malley is undenialbly and unashamedly Pro-Life. Ryan has never been absolutely straighforward on the issue.
2. O'Malley is undenialbly and unashamedly Pro 2nd ammendment. He supports CCW legislation. Ryan's liberal notions lead him to, among other things, run an embarrasing Internet gun buying sting which failed miserably when the cases were dropped because the suspects had been entrapped by Ryan's underlings.
3. O'Malley will oppose the granting of special rights to groups based on their sexual proclivities. Ryan, on the other hand, sees no problem with allowing such unconstitional legislation.
Too bad for the RINO'S that the TRUTH is finally getting out!!!
Jim Ryan doesn't deserve to hold public office ever again. He covered up for Lyin' Ryan, and even when he KNEW Rolando Cruz didn't commit the Nicarico murder, he STILL tried to have him put to death!
And even after Cruz was released from Jail (walked off of Death Row) Ryan STILL proclaimed Cruz's guilt.
Please. Jim Ryan is the biggest piece of crap running in the race, right next to that Liberal Democrat Vote Seeking Corinne Wood!
Are you trying to say that this is a special investigation? If what is being said about Jesse Jackson is true, you would think that Mr. Ryan would have done a little more than notice that his YR 2000 tax forms hadn't been filed.
Just on this fact alone I'd tend to side with whatever O'Malley throws at him......he seems like the typical incumbent.
Absolutely incorrect. Voters in this state (Illinois) are not about to hand the Governor's mansion over to the Democrats. It's bad enough the Democrats have seized control of the State House, and are stopping EVERYTHING that doesn't have a tax hike attached to it, from being passed. Mike Madigan (D) Speaker of the House in IL is the most hated man in Illinois.
BTW, LLJ, Ryan's poll numbers 'the internals' are really bad! Jack Roeser is a great guy!
