He should mention that the Congress and the SCOUTS have opened their sessions with a prayer since the nation was founded

God bless Bob Scheuer for verifying the record that many wish to pretend never existed.

Wasn't Washington a deist?

Bookmarked. I am afraid that some Freepers will show up here to denigrate this article. Oh well. That is their right - but the truth remains.

"Of all the animosities which have existed among mankind, those which are caused by a difference of sentiments in religion appear to be the most inveterate and distressing, and ought to be deprecated. I was in hopes that the enlightened and liberal policy, which has marked the present age, would at least have reconciled Christians of every denomination so far that we should never again see the religious disputes carried to such a pitch as to endanger the peace of society."
-- George Washington, letter to Edward Newenham, October 20, 1792

Research shows that 54 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence were ChristiansWho was the other, if Washington was indeed not a Christian?

Unfortunately the author forgets than in the debate over the language of the Declaration, it was proposed that the words "endowed by their Creator" should be "endowed by their Creator, the Lord Jesus Christ".
The change was voted down. While many founders were indeed Christians, they wanted to create a secular government.
Anybody remember the part in the Constitution about "no religious test"?
Our nation's strength springs from freedom, and respect for individual rights.

America was founded as a Christian nation, as best expressed by Noah Wabster:
"The religion which has introduced civil liberty is the religion of Christ and His apostles, which enjoins humility, piety and benevolence; which acknowledges in every person a brother, or a sister, and a citizen with equal rights. This is genuine Christianity, and to this we owe our free constitutions of government..."

"Religion is the only solid basis of good morals." - Gouveneur Morris
Really? Wow, I had no idea. I'd better quit volunteering and start raping, robbing and pillaging. I sure wouldn't want to disappoint the old Gouverenuer.

The American nation from its first settlement at Jamestown to this hour is based upon and permeated by the principles of the Bible The Bible or Christianity?
To: 2banana
This is a largely Christian nation, with a predominantly Christian population. At the time of the Constitution, a group of states with established Christian churches joined in a FEDERAL union, and DENIED to the new FEDERAL Congress any powers relating to relgion. The Constitution is largely based on Christian values and principles. The people living under it were envisioned as Christian people. The fact that the federal government was denied any powers relating to religion negates none of those facts about THE PEOPLE and the STATE governments. It is the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT which was intended to be neutral with regard to religion, not the states, and not the people.

...I would like to apply some facts from our nation's history. At this point the Demoncrats all go back to smokin' crack.
To: RoughDobermann
The etymology of the word "Christian" is from "Christ In". For one to have Christ in them they must "confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead" (Rom. 10:9). With that, one is born again of Holy Spirit and can edify and build that spirit (their life) with God's word, which is the Bible. Do you desire to know God?
