This is a largely Christian nation, with a predominantly Christian population. At the time of the Constitution, a group of states with established Christian churches joined in a FEDERAL union, and DENIED to the new FEDERAL Congress any powers relating to relgion. The Constitution is largely based on Christian values and principles. The people living under it were envisioned as Christian people. The fact that the federal government was denied any powers relating to religion negates none of those facts about THE PEOPLE and the STATE governments. It is the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT which was intended to be neutral with regard to religion, not the states, and not the people.

United States Constitution, Art. VI, par.3: "…no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."

First Amendment of the Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…"
