Sorry, but I am familiar with South Africa. It was a dictatorship. There was no "freedom of speech" if you opposed the government, and if you were the wrong color, you couldn't vote even if you had a Ph.D. They encourated "hereditary chiefs" to run the tribal areas: Uneducated men who essentially were toadys for the government. They insisted that people who lived in cities for generations weren't citizens, but were "visitors" from tribal areas, and who were governed by tribal laws (where women, for example, had few rights).

By insisting the workers were "visitors" the young men left their wives and children home, and lived in slums. Young men without family ties led to crime, rape, murder, and of course, HIV epidemic. But since you had to leave the cities when you retired or got sick (you were a visitor, remember?) you went home and gave the HIV to your wives and children before you died.

They could do a heart transplant in JoBurg, but in tribal areas, kids died of diarrhea and kwashiorkor. The tribal farms deteriorated, since the women were farmers, and used traditional methods based on slash and burn, but now there was no place to move and slash and burn to get new fields when the land was exhausted, so the result was ruined land.

Finally, if you were white, even if you were stupid, you could get a well paying job. A "kaffir" would be displaced by a white man wanting his job, and of course, a "kaffir" got one fifth the wages of a white man.

The good news is that whites could live in luxury in their enclaves and ignore the nearby slums.

No, I don't like South Africa today. But don't make it out as a perfect land back then. Like "Gone with the Wind" the perfect land is a myth.

Not to excuse either the US or SA of our sins, but after all "we are but men" -- but changes to "our" societies' determent has, is and will continue, sooner than later. People used to say that South Africa was 20 years behind the rest of the Western world. Television, for example, came late to South Africa (but so did pornography and the gay rights movement).

And, uh, don't forget the CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. White supremacists are not the saviours of South Africa/Zimbabwe, they're partially TO BLAME for its current condition. If they had given blacks equal rights, maybe they could have lived peacefully together. Instead, their repression gave communists a chance to take over (and the people of South Africa are incredibly LUCKY to have a leader like Mbeki, who's not a communist, even though he has plenty of faults)

OK, I'll fess up. I didn't read the whole article (nor the earlier, linked post), so I am not positive this wasn't mentioned, but the one thing that stands out for me is that the US has a tradition called the second amendment. I think that that makes a small difference. At the moment we are armed. One day we will have the will to use them.

Excellent post! I have felt this way for a long time and have sensed what has happened to South Africa could happen in our country to an extent. Here, people are afraid to "rock the boat" or stand up for what they believe. I work with some of these "panty wastes" and as long as they have it somewhat "cushy" they don't seem to be concerned about anything. A black majority in this country would be one filled with hate -filled "payback" time on their part. There would be no peace and harmony. South African whites were victims before the new government and I get really sickened when I hear of white farmers being murdered and their land taken by these savages. I believe Mandela is a Communist and and a fake.

This warning is right on the mark. Do not give up what you created to people who are unfit to rule because it is the PC thing. Democracy fails when it succumbs to the tyranny of unfit to rule minorities or majorities. History shows, in many cases how smaller "primitive" cultures have invaded larger "more civilized" cultures who have lost their fighting spirit. But this has led to rebirth and further advances until they too civilized that they lose their fighting spirit in that they do stand for what they originally believed in. However, PC enabled majorities, who were unfit to rule or utilize its rich resources, when rewarded by politicking the fruits of a creative minority , have always destructed, as Africa has shown.

I think the authors comparisons are very legitimate. When the Dutch emigrated to SA half a millenium ago , they did not conquer anyone, as the Spanish in the new world did. Through their hard work and talents they turned a wilderness into a productive land. The bounty thus created attracted peoples lacking the abilities to create such wealth for themselves. In time it became in the famous words of Bavarian leader F J Strauss "a simple matter of mathematics".

You won't hear any warnings from White Haitians. All 6-7,000 of them were lynched on a single day. You never hear about it do you? Greatest mass lynching in the Western Hemisphere. That certainly solved their race problem.

My daughter was invited to go to So. Africa by a classmate. I told her absolutely not, that SA has one of the highest crime rates in the world. Her friend got insulted by this. She told my daughter that it is very safe there, they have armed guards at their home.
