ORANGE COUNTY, March 8, 2002 The Sunday volunteer recognition program at the American Red Cross Orange County Chapter in Santa Ana, California, honors America both through the presentation of colors and in the music program.
The American Red Cross Chapter in Orange County and the Orange County High School of the Arts regret that we were not able to reach agreement on the music program with conductor Cherilyn Bacon. The dispute was over the music program and has nothing to do with patriotism. "God Bless America" is a wonderful song.
The event begins with the posting of the American Flag and the singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner." The dispute centers only on our sensitivity to religious diversity, and a preference for a music program that would be inclusive and not offend different populations participating in this particular event.

The United Sway says the same thing. Of course, they're both in deep with one another. The top executives at both get mega bucks. (upward of 300,00 a year).
The ARC took in over 2 billion last year and 86% of that was from direct public support. Why not just donate to other local charities? These middle-men do nothing to improve the process.
If you want to look at their financial filings through 2000 go to the link below, type in Red Cross and you can see their form 990 tax returns in PDF format.

Nothing about this program is insensitive to other religions. Across the world, America is the nation most tolerant and protective of all forms of religious expression. The idiocy reflected in this statement is a terrible stain on the ARC. Are there any sane and sensible leaders at ARC willing and able to halt that form of totalitarianism known as 'political correctness?' Apparently not.
If your objective was to make the ARC look stupid, then you have achieved outstanding success. Your position is shallow, warped and indefensible. No more money from me, ever, to your organization. I will ask my legislators to ensure that no tax dollars come your way. You have probably angered far more Americans than would ever have been offended by this program.
Signed"
Then I went to the Salvation Army web site and made an on-line donation, noting in my donation the good works they do towards America's service men and women.
Defend the Second
:
Don't forget the whole name of the organization:
RED CROSS/RED CRESCENT
Donations help fund organizations like the Palestinian Red Crescent Society,
which cranks out propaganda like this:
Israeli Army Shoots at Innocent Civilians & Pregnant Women
Isn't it comforting to know that the selfless contributions
of well-meaning Americans are going to support these "Red Crescent Societies"?

I have just read the March 8 statement by the American Red Cross regarding the above-referenced subject, and I have to say it is even more offensive than what I'd heard previously. I cannot conceive of the sheer gall necessary to blame this political correctness on your supposed "sensitivity to religious diversity" when it is blatantly indicative of your intolerance of religious diversity. One would have thought that the ARC would have learned its lesson after getting caught attempting to steal millions of dollars from victims of 9/11, but evidently that was too optimistic an assumption on my part. With every action it takes, the Red Cross disgusts me more. -- [Sloth]
P.S. Shouldn't the religiously offensive cross be replaced with some other emblem? The Red Swastika or the Red Pentagram, perhaps.
This line about "religious diversity" makes no literal sense. Are they saying that they were worried about offending atheists? No, even that can't be it, because as you note, they would then have to eliminate their symbol and their very name.
As everybody knows, the United Way is as much a pack of scumbags as the Red Cross. But is there any connection or pooling of funds between these two scumbag organizations? Does United Way disperse anything to Red Cross or are they "competitors"? (Hopefully it doesn't matter to the posters here at Free Republic who should certainly know by now what a pathetic and corrupt extortion racket United Way is.
At one time, shunning was widely used as a sign of societys disapproval. It should be much more widely practiced.
A friend of mine just had to change jobs, because the local United Way decided they could do her job better than she could, and cancelled funding to the org. she worked for. Now they have 10 people doing (terribly) what 3 did (very well) for over 30 years.
This friend now works for the Salvation Army, and wishes she had switched to them years ago. She greatly admires what they do and how they do it.
I bought a shirt after 9-11, a part of the proceeds to have gone to the Red Cross. Never again. The Salvation Army will get my donations from now on, instead of either the Red Cross or United Way.
Well... sort of. This event reminds me of an incident that happened in New Jersey a few years back, possibly during the 2000 elections. A group of Catholic schoolkids was ejected from a public event because they were planning to sing a hymn. Their leader refused to change his song list to something more "secular." The real controversy began, however, when a group of black gospel singers went on at the event and sang spiritual songs without a single challenge. The excuse after the fact? Proimoting cultural diversity. Go figure.
The good news is that incidents like these bring in new recruits to conservatism every day.
That's the truth. I learned that in high school, when I got my first summer job at Sears & Roebuck. They hauled everybody into a room, where we were given a shakedown by United Way representatives. We were handed cards and told to check the box indicating the amount we wished to "donate" every paycheck. Zero was not included, and it was made very clear a blank card was not acceptable. I left the room anyway, tore up the card, and have never given United Way a penny since.
