Sugar on grits? Get a rope! My wife is from Virginia and she will fight anyone that tells her it isn't in The South.

Depends on what part of Virginia. I lived for several years in Northern Virginia (DC suburbs). It definitely could not be considered the south. I felt further away from my southern heritage there than anywhere.

Why would I try to win this woman over? She might move down here.

Got that right. We moved from Tampa to Vickburg fifteen years ago. Too dang many Yankees, too close together, with bad manners and attitudes, using up the water supply and then gripping about it. They took my home and ruined it.

- In my South we Bar-B-Que in short sleeves between Christmas and New Years.

- In my South we remember that a White Christmas is a Northern European and Yankee myth! It snows here about as often as it does in the Holy Land.

I lived in Northern Virginia, Spotsylvania and Orange counties to be exact. It was more southern than Central Florida.

I've seen two white Christmases in my whole life. I like to duck hunt in the snow but other than that I find it annoying. The yankees can keep it all.

Gotta respectfully disagree on that one jgrubbs. Although Central Florida isn't my beloved South, I still feel in many ways that I'm in the South. The pace is slower, the people friendlier, and I can get sweet tea and grits in most restaurants :) It's not Alabama, but its a lot better than No. Virginia.

I'm really surprised boiled peanuts weren't mentioned in the article. :-)

Central Florida is definately not the south. It's more like Northern Puerto Rico. However, I live in Orlando and do love it for it's own reasons. Pensacola, though, is my place of birth and I'll argue with anyone who claims North Florida isn't the south. Our claim to fame is the beautiful white sand beaches. Affectionately known as the "Redneck Riviera".

Can you post your Menu so we can see what the food of the South is like

Supper tonight (Valentines) is stuffed filet mignon with twice baked stuffed potatoes, and warm spinach and scallop salad. This weekend, for the party, will be tamales, hand-made tortillas, refried beans, beef and chicken fajita, guacamole, spanish rice, salsa (some of the ingredients from the garden), beans and knuckles, and sopaipillas served with local honey. All home-made of course. I started cooking yesterday.

Here's a little test to find out if someone is actually from the South, not that you won't be able to tell in few minutes but this is fun anyway-

Take a piece of paper and just write "Boudin" on it. Hand it to the person and ask them what that is, how do you pronounce it, and if they like it. If they don't know, tell em to get back wherever they came from.

Being from Virginia of which I am proud as any Southern Gentleman could possibly be, but when you put to words Sunday Dinner at Grandmas you not only touched my heart but my actual spirit. For this I wish to say thank you, each Sunday at my Mothers we have lunch as a family, my youngest is just 12 and he gets upset if for any reason we don't attend( missed 1 since he's been born). I grew up up around Smithfield (Hog Capitol of World) we still kill hogs and smoke our own meat. Currently I work in Radiation Safety and have fun with that when the wife and travel back to her home in Ohio. My in-laws were down once and we had collards and butter beans, tomatoes and cornbread (Johnny Cakes,Ash Cakes) they had never had such and ate everything and left the table with grease on their chins. Each time we go up we take smoke house cured bacon, susage and fresh eggs, they truly love it. Well thanks again for the rememberance of times that haven't all gone bye.

I see in your bio that you are Yurok. Smoked salmon will cause me to crawl over hot deserts and broken glass to get some.

However, in Florida, smoked mullet with ice-freaking-cold beer is just about heaven. Add smoked shrimp and you're there.
