Better yet, I think the official flag that is flown during the Opening Ceremonies is the WTC flag. For symbolic reasons.

Looks like you got it right.

"NY Port Authority officer Kurt Killenger says the US Olympic committee wants to use the flag but the International Olympic committee won't allow it."

Am I the only one who finds this "international community" on my last nerve?

Carry the American flag from the WTC....and carry it proudly for every soul that perished in this unprovoked attack on free people everywhere.

Carry the American flag from the WTC as THE symbol of the unwavering resolve of freedom-loving people across the globe.

If the "International Olympic Committee"...or the "International Whatever Committee"...doesn't like it---too d*mn bad!

Maybe, just maybe...it's time we told all of the international committees that our wallets are closed!

Great article(s) in today's WSJ about how the Europeans are shafting America for military defense expenditures so that they can spend their own money on social programs and fun.

Maybe another flag would be more appropriate. The Gadsden, perhaps?

Not anymore, since the networks began actively promoting other countries athletes while obscuring our own. Can have the philistines feeling patriotic or experiencing feelings of, (horrors) national pride can we.

That was the last year that I ever watched the Olympics, with the exception of Calgary. I remember well that the US events were not even shown in some instances, favoring other nations in their coverage. At the time, I just assumed that the producers had made a terrible mistake. Now, I know the reason.

Give me back the commentators who gush and tell all of OUR American teams, thank you very much.

What's shocking is that I see nobody from "our" side telling them to stuff it where the sun doesn't shine.

Forget it. We would look just like the Arabs, with their constant stream of rabid verbal hyperbole. We need to keep doing like we have been: Issuing plain spoken statements of our priorities and policy, and backing them up with action. It's a given that much of the rest of the world, including many of our allies, and especially their presses, will respond will frequent fits of bed-wetting alarm, but secretly they will be damn glad we are doing what we are doing.

In short we need to go along and ignore the peripherial bitching as much as possible. Our acknowledgement only legitimizes self-marginalizing America haters. Where response is necessary it should be calmly stated so as to contrast with the ludicrously emotional nature of the typical anti-American (anti-Western, anti-self-defense, anti-patriot, anti-civilization, anti-capitalist, anti-republican...) spew.

That's the rule of thumb. But as for the opening ceremonies, I agree with you. They should for damn sure be carrying that flag. Don't say anything, though, just do it.

Sean just said that the IOC had agreed that the flag would fly over the stadium during the games but that the US Olympic team wouldn't carry the flag in during the opening ceremonies.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

This would be a nice question to ask the President. "How do you feel that the IOC will not allow the American flag from the WTC be carried at the opening event?"

Is there anything else they can do to ruin the Olympics, before people get there? That stupid comment, about "too American," is another form of global terrorism,-- we should not tolerate it.

Remember the Great Santa FReep?

In reply to your 179...

They are not being assimilated, regardless of you opinoin to the
contrary. Look at the stats, they do not vote republican, and
I doubt that they ever will.

I wonder why we print our ballots in Spanish, if they are all
learning English?

I wonder why speaking English is not a requirement to vote?

I wonder why immigrants can draw public welfare, when a
condition of their entry was they would not be a burdon to the
tax payer? (illegals get this handout too)

I wonder why the sponsor who said he would take care of
the immigrant if the need arose, is not held accountable?

I wonder why the employer who hires the illegals is not held
accountable to the law?

I guess it is just coincidental that all these things are happening,
without any interference from the law?

How can we be so paranoid? Nothing here to see just move along.

You haven't noticed all the U.S. soldiers all over the world where we want things like oil? Hmmm? It's ALWAYS about money. And/or power. "We" are imposing "our" will - actually the will of the globalist corporations - all over the world.

You are a sad little cynic.

Yeah, enough of all this bother we have taken on, among our many other self-imposed responsibilities as the world's leading nation and economy, of assuring a steady oil supply for the world. Without it the world economy will collapse, and hundreds of millions will die in a killing global depression; but America will suffer less than most, and can squeak by on domestic reserves. Hell with the little brown people. Let 'em die.

Enough of this globalization and free trade as well. It just lets ordinary people and small businesses participate in the game. Better we re-erect barriers which only allow the big well connected corporations with lots of lawyers to operate globally.

I couldn't make my way through all these threads, but I've read enough of them to make me want to puke. I've never seen more whining and crap here before. Give the politics a rest. This is about sport and I could give a rat's ass about the IOC, the sponsors, the talking heads, the rip offs and the rest of the crap. I ain't BOYCOTIN' nothing. What I know is the sacrifice made by these athletes and their parents. There is a much deeper and spiritual dynamic here than politics and symbolism. Unfortunately, many of the Freepers here either were never athletes or forgot the lessons of competetive sports.
