Dr. Pepper omits "under God" from Pledge to Flag
KLIF - Dallas/Fort Worth ^ | 2/1/02 | self

Posted on 02/01/2002 8:16:25 AM PST by smokinleroy

I heard on the Darrel Ankarlo show on KLIF radio (Dallas/Fort Worth) this morning that some students in Iowa are launching a letter-writing campaign to protest the actions of Dallas based Dr. Pepper. It seems on a recently issued can with a patriotic theme including a picture of the statue of liberty that they printed the Pledge of Allegience to the Flag in which they omitted the phrase "under God". When inquired as to the reason, the company representative said that there was not enough room. Anyone else hear this story?

Careful... Cadbury/Schweppes owns Dr. Pepper/7-UP, so you're eliminating a good chunk of your soft-drink choices...

Here's my note to Dr. Pepper...

I understand that you recently made a can with the pledge of allegiance on it but omitted the words "under God". I also understand that you claim that there wasn't room for those words.

1. Tell me, why were those words deleted? Why not take out "to the flag", "United States of America", "to the republic", or "with liberty and justice for all"? You could have saved more room! (By the way, please don't get any ideas...this is sarcasm in case you missed it.)

2. "under God" has officially been part of the pledge for nearly 50 years (except when Hollywood types like Tom Hanks garble it).

3. Not enough room? Ever heard of changing the font size?

I drink 2-3 cans of DP per day (sometimes more, for which my wife is always riding me). Unless you can give me an adequate explanation and correct this travesty, count on losing the sales of 1000 or so cans per year.

BTW, what were you thinking? Your strongest market is in the south (a.k.a. the bible belt). Heck, you're sort of a Dallas based company if you ignore the Cadbury/Schweppes connection. I don't live in the south but I have to imagine that you're going to have some mightily ticked-off customers.

Sincerely,

I don't know if these cans made it to the south. The incident reportedly happened in Iowa.
