Some lawmakers are coming up with an innovative solution for solving the problem of illegal immigrants driving on America's roads: They want to license them so they are no longer driving illegally.

Utah, North Carolina, and Tennessee are among a handful of states where lawmakers are proposing allowing 9 million illegal immigrants to obtain licenses. Supporters of the proposals argue that licensing illegals will force them to learn the rules of the road and sign up for auto insurance.

"What I'm trying to deal with is the reality of the fact that these individuals are here, they're working here, and they're driving here," said Colorado state Sen. Ron Tupa, whose bill earlier this month would remove the requirement that drivers license applicants provide proof they are in the United States legally. "

No you're not. If you were trying to deal with it you would be working with INS to get them deported. All these politicians who want to reward people for breaking the law don't deserve to be in public office.

The most amazing fact about this article is in the headline, i.e. the debate continues.

"In Illinois, Colorado and Georgia, lawmakers argue that highway safety concerns would be eased if undocumented illegal immigrants had licenses. "

Highway safety concerns could also be eased by deporting the millions of people who are here illegally.

"In Colorado, Illinois and California, illegal immigrants would be allowed to get licenses by showing a taxpayer identification number, which they can obtain without a Social Security card. "

???

Has anyone else heard of this?!? I've never been able to get a job without an SS card. Is this some special loophole that only illegals are elegible for?

In clarification of my statement, let me say that I do not agree with issuing a license to drive to an illegal immigrant. Nor do I agree with allowing them access to taxpayer funded programs, to include government run schools, of any kind. Charitable organizations who survive on private donations is another story.

Of course not. They have proven, just by coming here, that they don't respect American law. Why would they obey any insurance laws? American insurance laws apply to Americans. These people aren't Americans and would be insulted if you called them one.

Exactly. Just the fact that we're having this idiotic "debate" shows that we're losing our collective minds as a nation.

My state is being literally overrun with lawbreakers and instead of trying to solve the problem, these s**thead pols are thinking of ways to make them comfy.

I'm wondering what laws I can break. I can't think of any and I was born here.

"The assumption that a busboy, a dishwasher, a lawnmower, driving a $800 auto will buy insurance if he only had a license is laughable. Having twice been hit by uninsured illegal immigrants driving in California I can assure the politicians that insurance is not on the list of illegal aliens things to buy."

Living in a state (North Carolina) that openly licensed illegals - until 9/11, when that ended - I can assure you they don't get insurance just because they get licenses.

Local State Farm adjuster told me that, in fact, most uninsured-motorist claims in this state now involve illegal aliens as the uninsured driver.

Police-blotter column in local "mainstream" daily shows it too; it is very common - if not the norm - for any Hispanic busted for DUI also to be charged with uninsured driving. Either all insured Hispanics never drive drunk - or this is (more) corroboration that few get insured just because they get licensed.

This is not about driving or insurance.

It is about creating defacto citizenship.

This must end.

Next, we taxpayers will be buying cars and insurance for the illegals. We're already doing this for welfare people. It's a new entitlement.

You are correct sir! Insurance will be on a vehilce long enough to get it registered and plated for the most part. One month of insurance then 11 months of driving without. I say park a paddy wagon outside of the DMV and take any illegal who tries for a license right to booking for deportation.

"What I'm trying to deal with is the reality of the fact that these individuals are here, they're working here, and they're driving here," said Colorado state Sen. Ron Tupa"

Since when does a politician deal with reality? The reality is illegal aliens are here illegally. They are taking more in welfare payments than they are producing. They have jobs that unemployed American citizens could fill.

Catering to illegal aliens is the biggest travesty in America today. This is one issue that will lead to the downfall of America. Illegal aliens bring more problems than they fix. When is America going to wake up to this?

The reality is illegal aliens are here illegally.

Agree. In addition, the reality is that the politicos don't want to face the reality of the illegal alien problem because they might be accused of PROFILING. So they sit on their backsides and propose legislation that gives these slackers MORE rights under the guise of "easing highway safety concerns" for the rest of us. What a joke. And since when does having a license to drive make anyone a better driver or the highway safer? This PC crap has got to end...
