JUSTICE COVERS 'NUDE' STATUES
DRUDGE ^ | 01/28/02

Fed up with having his picture taken during events in the Justice Department's Great Hall in front of semi-nude statues, Attorney General John Ashcroft has reportedly ordered massive draperies to conceal the offending figures -- which have been displayed since the 1930s!

The draperies were installed last week at a cost of just over $8,000, reports ABCNEWS.com's Beverley Lumpkin.

At the center of the controversy: two enormous and stylized but largely naked aluminum statues.

The female figure represents the Spirit of Justice; the male on the right is the Majesty of Justice. The male is clad in only a cloth draped over his essential parts; the female wears a sort of toga-style garment, but one breast is entirely exposed.

Last November, during a press conference announcing new challenges of fighting terrorism, Ashcroft was photographed with the naked breast right over his shoulder!

The snap ran in major papers.

It is possible that restricting angles was found to be unworkable. Bacically, all he did was re-arrange the backdrop on a temporary basis. I am no prude, nor a bible thumper but I understand the distraction now that photos were published.

My anger about this is due to the fact that I thought I had accidently gone to DU when I saw the comments on this thread. I find that to be worrysome and somewhat surprising.

JMO, but don't leave your day job to become a comedian. Paranoid "humor" doesn't sell these days, except to ACLU types.

You are dealing with Libertarian whiners who hate Ashcroft because they are afraid he will take away their dope

I can't speak for others, but I don't do dope. Don't even smoke cigarettes anymore. Even if I DID,I wouldn't be worried about Janet Ashcroft doing anything about it. What we complaining about here is the man has literally thousands of crimes that were comitted by the last administration to investigate, including treason, murder, witness tampering, and voter fraud, and he's worried about a bleeping aluminum nipple! He obviously has different priorities than investigating crimes.

BTW,the other thing we are complaining about is having to deal with the mental midgets who are prepared to do and say anything at any time to defend the idiotic right,no matter how stupid it might be.

Correction, you don't know that. Most of the people who are "getting their nipples hard" about this are well known Libertarians on FR.
I'm no Libertarian and I think he made himself out to look like an idiot. 99% of any group of Americans looking at that scene wouldn't even register the exposed breast in their mind. Evidently, the offending item really really constrinated JA.

Look if the evil boobie gave JA the cold sweats, he should have just replaced both statues as part of a "refreshening" effort. But, no why didn't he walk over there and put a "pastie" on it himself. Unbelievable!

Depends on what you expect. If you expect us to be a bunch of art-prudes who blush every time we see a Rubens painting, then I am happy we disappointed you. If you expect us to be against the waste of 8000 dollars of federal money, applied in such a way as to cause the applier to be the butt of jokes from now until either 2004 or 2008, well, then, yes, that is what you can expect.

, just a guess, but I think he might have a few interesting magazines laying around...

Oh,yeah. The people who are so obsessed over something as minor as this are almost always "secret freaks". I'm betting we are talking whips and chains, not to mention costumes.

No, but then I'm not a repressed creep who thinks Republicans can do no wrong and that nudity is dirty.

Like I have stated before what is wrong with Ashcroft not wanting a big boob hanging over him when photos are taken?

Isn't that his right? He can't help it if a FDR commissioned statue helps make pictures full of double entendre.

You know for all your Libertarian ideals you are being pretty hypocritical about it. But I guess you all would rather type Nazi as every other word, than look at common sense.

It looks like the epitomie of kitsch.

It's not kitsch! I like kitsch. Kitsch is in. That's not kitsch.

We had a state congresswoman in Arizona who tried to pass a law limiting the number of sexual devices any individual could buy in a one month period. It was dubbed the dildo bill, and after she received hundreds of cukecumbers in the mail, she finally slithered back to her hiding space..
hahaha Maybe she should go work for J.A.. I'm sure she knows that someplace, her ideas for society's betterment would be appreciated.

as I do about the art BYU had redone on campus to show historic Mormon figures without their beards because the students were not allowed facial hair either.

They really did this????

What is wrong with an AG not wanting to have a picture with a big boob hanging over him on every front page of the nation?

Because it distracts from the big boob standing behind the podium?

Some things are just TOO easy.

Isn't that his right?

Rights are non-obligatory. You can't have a right to something someone else has to pay for.

I think I need to hear this from you without any ambiguity.

  Check one:
[ ] I think JA was correct in coverning up the statue [ ] I think JA created a public image problem
