JUSTICE COVERS 'NUDE' STATUES
DRUDGE ^ | 01/28/02

Fed up with having his picture taken during events in the Justice Department's Great Hall in front of semi-nude statues, Attorney General John Ashcroft has reportedly ordered massive draperies to conceal the offending figures -- which have been displayed since the 1930s!

The draperies were installed last week at a cost of just over $8,000, reports ABCNEWS.com's Beverley Lumpkin.

At the center of the controversy: two enormous and stylized but largely naked aluminum statues.

The female figure represents the Spirit of Justice; the male on the right is the Majesty of Justice. The male is clad in only a cloth draped over his essential parts; the female wears a sort of toga-style garment, but one breast is entirely exposed.

Last November, during a press conference announcing new challenges of fighting terrorism, Ashcroft was photographed with the naked breast right over his shoulder!

The snap ran in major papers.

Why don't you complain about the waste FDR made with the commission of the statue?

FDR's commissioning of art is one of the few Constitutionally lawful acts he performed. The Constitution gives the Federal Government specific power to subsidize useful arts. The majority of conservatives can see that Ashcroft has made a horses a$$ of himself over this. So despite the fact that government commissioned art goes wasted on you personally, doesn't mean it's a waste. Pearls before swine...

Do the murals of T.H.Benton also give you that funny feeling in your pants and make you angry?

"What is wrong with an AG not wanting to have a picture with a big boob hanging over him on every front page of the nation?"

Well, he is being a boob in this boo-boo. Perhaps he just can't stand such a graphic comparison of him with a much nicer looking boob in the background. :-)

I agree completely! Something else that comes to mind about this is when the taliban blew up the statues. Seems a lot like the same kind of deal to me

You are going way too far! Find a democrat for your stinking comments!

I hadn't thought of it that way. In that case, perhaps Ashcroft just doesn't want a pair of unnaturally hard hoohaas behind him. It may remind him of Madonna in her "you could put an eye out with those things" phase or something.

What would the general feeling be if these statues were destroyed by either a terrorist or an assassin?

Correction, you don't know that. Most of the people who are "getting their nipples hard" about this are well known Libertarians on FR.

We had a state congresswoman in Arizona who tried to pass a law limiting the number of sexual devices any individual could buy in a one month period.

Uhh, what was the number she came up with? And what terrible social problem was she trying to correct?

Oh now you are showing your morally liberal vitriolic paranoid hysterics.

You are doing the ACLU proud, IMHO.

The Evil White Slaveowner statue should be naked, but the other 2 should be dressed immaculately in designer clothes.

The whips! You forget the whips! The minorities should be holding whips so then can punish the evil one. Either that or rap CD's,I can't remember which.

You mean to tell us you think this is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?

No, but then I'm not a repressed creep who thinks Republicans can do no wrong and that nudity is dirty.

Wonder why Newt is no longer in Congress, and the DimReps don't know how to fight back?
