JUSTICE COVERS 'NUDE' STATUES
DRUDGE ^ | 01/28/02

Fed up with having his picture taken during events in the Justice Department's Great Hall in front of semi-nude statues, Attorney General John Ashcroft has reportedly ordered massive draperies to conceal the offending figures -- which have been displayed since the 1930s!

The draperies were installed last week at a cost of just over $8,000, reports ABCNEWS.com's Beverley Lumpkin.

At the center of the controversy: two enormous and stylized but largely naked aluminum statues.

The female figure represents the Spirit of Justice; the male on the right is the Majesty of Justice. The male is clad in only a cloth draped over his essential parts; the female wears a sort of toga-style garment, but one breast is entirely exposed.

Last November, during a press conference announcing new challenges of fighting terrorism, Ashcroft was photographed with the naked breast right over his shoulder!

The snap ran in major papers.

Saw 'em. They look fake.

And, oh, by the way...They're real and they're spectacular.

I simply think that a statue in a public place (especially government)ought to have some damn clothes on.

Why? Are you seriously contending that someone is being harmed because of these statues? Or are you saying that it is one of the functions of government to insure that nobody gets offended?

Instead of leading and showing people that our ideas and principles are better and desirable the GOP is instead busying itself with gaining power by appeasing the unprincipled and pandering to the left.

If leading people, in your mind, means desecrating great artworks done by masters, then the left's description of us as American Taliban is correct.

Count me out of this Victorian severity. I'm a conservative, not a Quaker.

Oh please, what about the taxpayer money that was spent for the statue. I bet you it was more than $8,000 in today's dollars.

Why don't you complain about the waste FDR made with the commission of the statue?

Would you rather he spend $100,000 for a new electical system to handle the media cameras and movement of the podium?

Nah - just do it the fundamental way and blow up the statue.

"Them boobies blew up real good!"

Now, he has made himself into a joke.

My point earlier. Ashcroft has armed the comedians and mean spirited media with everything they need to make fun of him from now on. Look what happened to Dan Quayle. Quayle didn't do anything to deserve the image forced on him. Ashcroft has dressed himself in a clown suit and will wonder forever why people laugh at him.

Really? This will be over in a couple of days. Jay and Dave will make their obigatory joke and move on. Things have changed since 9/11 except for the moral liberal Libertarians.

It is not an art museum.

Of course it is an ART museum, it goes to the very HEART of what government buildings are supposed to be about.

PEOPLE. EXCELLENCE. STANDARDS.

Works of art have always been present in public places such as this as a reminder of what we're shooting for.

Ashcroft is an idiot.

It's the totalitarian regimes who first do away with art - remove the humanity from the situation.

I reconsider, perhaps Ashcroft is not an idiot,

he may well be something worse.

Unfortunately, every action in Washington is viewed as political.

True......inside the Beltway. In the rest of real America, he will be applauded for the strength of his convictions. Republicans and/or conservatives are never going to win DC, No. VA, or MD anyway. So who cares?

Yep, that was a waste, too. What can we do about it?

OTOH, we CAN stop needless spending in the present day, such as draperies to cover statues.

You diehard Republicans are a riot - useless spending is fine as long as it's a Republican wasting taxpayer dollars. Republicans can do no wrong.

And people wonder why we vote Libertarian.
