FORMER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, U.N. AMBASSADOR ALAN KEYES TO JOIN MSNBC

SECAUCUS, NJ- January 7, 2002- Former Presidential Candidate and Reagan-era U.S. Ambassador at the United Nations, Alan Keyes has joined MSNBC as host of a new one-hour commentary show, “Alan Keyes Is Making Sense,” weeknights at 10PM, ET. Erik Sorenson, president and general manager, MSNBC, made the announcement today.

“We're excited that Alan is bringing his highly-regarded grasp of global issues and his larger-than-life personality to MSNBC," said Sorenson. "This network has distinguished itself as the cable news channel for smart young viewers interested in knowing about their world. Alan's deep knowledge, incredible capacity to frame debate, and provocative views will be a great addition to an already-terrific primetime lineup.”

“Alan Keyes Is Making Sense” is a live one-hour talk show providing in-depth analysis and commentary on the issues of the day from politics, economics to the various cultural hot buttons. The program will originate from Washington, D.C.

He was the Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs from 1985-87.

Alan Keyes is also a two-time Republican presidential candidate and two-time Republican Senate nominee from the state of Maryland. His greatest public exposure came most recently through his dynamic and much extolled performances in the 2000 Republican Presidential Debates.

For the past 10 years, Keyes has reached a nationwide audience each day through his nationally syndicated radio program, “The Alan Keyes Show: America’s Wake-Up Call.” He is the author of two critically acclaimed books, Masters of the Dream: The Strength and Betrayal of Black America and Our Character, Our Future: Reclaiming America’s Moral Destiny, with a third to be released soon. It is good news, but I think 4 days a week is a mistake. It should be once a week. Keyes will not be able with this format to have shows with real substance over time, with an in depth discussion of the issues, in part because he won't have time to prepare. It will be more in the nature of the other daily shows, which are more superficial (including superficial argument) and involve lots of political gossip. No doubt the show will start off stong, but I think Keyes will be hard pressed in time to continue to offer fresh and substantive material. We shall see.

Good for Alan. Although I was already a Keyes fan, watching him make mincemeat of Dershowitz during their "church and State" debate convinced me that this guy needs greater exposure. I think "talk television" is the perfect forum for Alan and I hope he becomes MSNBC's biggest hit this year.

I hear your points, but remember that MSNBC is basically serving a niche market, and so doesn't need to attract every soccer mom for this show to be a success. There are going to be a segment(especially among independents) that will love the straight direct conversation, even if a bit shrill. And my guess is that a significant portion of the hard-core right(in the BEST sense of that phrase) will also be attracted.

Of course it all depends on content. If all he does is bash Bush, then el sinko. But I give him more credit than that, think it will be balanced. It won't be O'Reilly, but ratings will be solid.

Fox has proven, once and for all, that "fair and balanced" works. Does anyone think this would have happened before Fox started putting conservatives on the air with any regularity? Just give the people what they want to hear, what they know to be true, and they will respond. If you build it, he will come.

Cal, this is a dream come true for me. Dr. Keyes got my vote in '96 and in '00. He speaks out of genuine concern for the direction this country is headed, is the most logical of all the analysts out there, and is the quickest on his feet in terms of debate skills. What a coup for MSNBC!

Looks like everyone is trying to get the conservatives back. No matter what you think of Keyes this is another small victory (will be total victory when the shows put together talking panels that are not so liberal leaning.)

"The guy's so shrill and off-putting I can't imagine him surviving long on TV, unless he learns to tone it down a bit."

While I'm a reformed Keyester who doesn't hang wide-eyed on the guy's every word as if it came down directly from heaven, he' actually no more annoying in his speech and mannerisms than Chris Matthews. I wish the show well. It looks like, in contrast to CNN, MSNBC knows how to take a hint from the market. Like Buchanan, Keyes is a media personality - not a politician. This is a good move.

Nobody'll be happier than me if Keyes pulls it off. But I fear he'll need a personality transplant.

RINO? If so then what do you claim he actually is, Democrat, Libertarian? None fit.

Conservative iconoclast seems more apt.

I do not think he nor his temperment is made for being a talking head show host.

I told Richard Ferrier (rdf) to counsel Keyes to let the other guy edge in with have a word or two, and perhaps even finish a sentence, so I suspect all will be well. Not to worry. :)

I haven't heard of Ken Hamblin here in LA, but we do have our very own Larry Elder, a neo Libertarian, who would great as well. I believe he had a short lived syndicated TV show called Moral Court. You can listen live 3-6pm pacific @ KABC.com.

Keyes? A RINO? Are you on drugs, man?

Keyes is a true to the Constitution conservative who is an outspoken voice for conservatism on racial issues, the 2nd Amendment, global and fiscal policy as well as being fiercly pro-life.

The only disagreement I have with Keyes' issues is his acknowledgement of the Drug War's failure but his refusal to look at other options.

I think you need to clarify yourself. Either way, Keyes over Gretta Van Susteren is a no-brainer.

Alan Keyes tells it like it is regarding the Republican Party. Damn glad he's gonna have his own show. Here's an example of AK holding the RINOs accountable...

GOP Folds On ChinaGate

I hope his MSNBC venture is a raging success.

The only reason MSNBC hired him is because they know he doesn't like Bush and they think it would be great to have a conservative within their network bash W day in and day out.

"I just hope if/whenever his show is cancelled..." WITHOUT the ratings numbers he won't last long.

And, to get the ratings, he has to get the MSPMS DEMONrats to watch his rants (which they won't) or the pubbies to turn-on MSPMS (which they won't).

If he survives through Election 2002 (which he won't) he might make it a year (which he shouldn't!) unless he starts more attacks on W (which he probably will).
