Having driven from Dallas to Nashville and even having ridden with my parents along that route when I was younger, I can attest to the fact that Arkansas has absolutely craptacular roads. There is always construction over a very unreasonable stretch of the interstate, making traffic range from bad to please-God-kill-me-now. I-40 is terrible, and I-30 is a bit better but not much moreso.

Not gotta flame you.... It's another world actually three or more on the roads... Truckers, autos, cycles. Each has it's own concerns and problems.... You worked in the trucking industry so I expect you have a good insight into their thinking.

LOL..... Don't want them clogging up the IH traveling along at 65 MPH don'tcha see..... Gosh they'd get run over or have traffic stacked up for miles....Who drives 65 mph, the average speed is right now 73 to 75 mph and is noticeably increasing to 75 to 78 mph(trucks and cars).

Just did I-10 between Houston and Lake Charles, La.
Between Beaumont and Lake Charles, the right-hand eastbound lane was so bumpy, it was impassable.
NO ONE was in it; we used it as a passing lane.
That's 60 miles of bad road, and it was still crummy when I got off in Lake Charles.
I-45 between Dallas and Houston was sure nice; only one spot of construction at Corsicana.

Who drives 65 mph, the average speed is right now 73 to 75 mph and is noticeably increasing to 75 to 78 mph(trucks and cars).By way of making manifest the absolutely idiotic assumption that lowering the speed limit in specified areas, depending upon the population, is going to be observed without followup enforcement is a "hoot".
Texas is good at threatening enforcement at all hours by all troopers available but is in reality hoping for voluntary compliance, this hope is likely predicated upon budget restraints, which is just wishful thinking.
When that doesn't work nothing is changed unless and until there is an appreciable increase in injuries and property damage that can be directly attributed to these killer speeds.
Of course the responsible driver has more control over reducing this carnage than any "special traffic enforcement program".
He is the key to change things for the better, by improving his attitude toward his responsibility for the lives and property of others, or by way of his pocket book.
There really isn't a more effectve way to "ensure domestic tranquility", on or off the highway, than for all to take responsibility for their actions, preferably before the fact.
UTOPIAN, probably, but aren't we all the "captains of our fate"?

Pennsylvania has incredibly poor roads, too - particularly for a very-high-tax state that is affluent.
You go under that big sign from low-tax, poor West Virginia - and the roads instantly change from smooth to horrid.

Arkansas indeed has the worst roads ever. We went through Georgia and they are RE-paving sections of road that are better than our best.
Good news is that Governor Huckabee is working on it. I-40 is being repaved starting at Little Rock going north right now and much work on other Interstates going on as well. Arkansas should be moving down on this list in the next few years.
