WASHINGTON, Dec 11, 2001 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- The U.S. military has confirmed that Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, and leaders of his al-Qaida network are hiding in a mountainous area in eastern Afghanistan, the ABC television network said Tuesday.
After dropping a powerful "daisy cutter" bomb on the Tora Bora mountain cave and tunnel complex Sunday, the U.S. military monitored a series of panicked radio and satellite-phone calls, ABC quoted U.S. intelligence sources as saying.
The communications showed bin Laden was near the blast and is now on the run, and that many other al-Qaida leaders were killed, it said.
Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a Pentagon press briefing Tuesday that Sunday's bombing had the "desired" effect.
U.S. special operations forces on the ground confirmed "dead al-Qaida" members, Myers said.

Honesty is never so noticable until you do without it for so long. It sure is refreshing!

They call the daisy cutter a "poor man's atom bomb." We could always manufacture more daisy cutters if we needed to. In fact, we can probably produce them faster than we can drop them. Let's just hope they never fall in the hands our our enemies so that they can be used against us!
I don't believe reports that Al Qaida are escaping Tora Bora to Pakistan and Iran. I would think that with the surveillance capabilities we have and our total air superiority, that this would not be allowed to happen. Of course, if the military was destroying fleeing and/or surrendering Al Qaida and Taliban troops, this is not something we would want to announce publicly. Hence the rumors that they are "escaping."

Not slamming you, kattracks, but why is the breaking news every day "WE'RE CLOSING IN ON OSAMA!" It gets kind of hard to be excited over the same non-news every single day.

I would think the good news here is that there is no real leap of technology involved to get these back in the pipeline. They are basically just a large container for the slurry, and a standoff fuse, with the 'chute rigging.
If someone needed one awful fast, and didn't have one, seems to me that one could gin up one fairly quickly using available resources, a welder, some of DuPont's finest Tovex, additives as needed, and existing fusing/parachutes to make a passable substitute.

He picked that up from Rumsfeld...lol. They are going to be quite a team and yes, truth is so refreshing.

Gee, strange that is it is taking us so long to find and hit Bin Laden. After all, didn't Clinton just miss him with that cruise missile by "that much"? (sarcasm)

Hey, kat, I'm surprised at you! You're usually FAR AHEAD of the curve on stuff like this! The same "news" was posted in Breaking about two days ago.

Heck! those things are only a metal tank full of a slurried explosive. They could just as easily fill a grain silo with that stuff and drop it the same way...a 100,000# sequoia cutter!
the only limit would be the carrying capacity of the aircraft delivering it!

We wouldn't be fighting the same war in the same manner...we would be relying on Mr Janet Reno to "bring these people to justice". Don't sell Reno short. Remember what "she" did to bring the women and children at Waco to '"justice." I think if she had her way, she'd nuke half the world in that manner (with a special emphasis on the U.S. red zone). I see a lot of Eric Harris-style pent-up rage in that creature.

A friend of ours who works for Phoenix Fire Dept (and who went to ground zero 2 weeks after the attacks to work) said that even though he is a democrat, he voted for George W. Bush! He said, "I cannot imagine Al Gore's response to all this and am so glad he is not president! A democrat with union affiliation said this!!!

. . . the people who pass themselves off as journalists who were asking the questions, calculated to continue the tradition of lying, and Rumsfeld would not let them. He . . . told them . . . "if I were to speculate on this (something going on in Afghanistan), I would be lying to you, because I don't know the answer". . . . I gave Mr Rumsfeld a standing ovation.
Donald Rumsfeld is my new Hottie of the Month. I love the way he takes NO cr@p from the presstitutes.

Honesty is never so noticable until you do without it for so long. Sheesh, you know it. I had a nightmare last night that Klintoon was still Prez and losers like Madeline Albright were handling the war on terrorism. I honestly believe that Albright accomplishes nothing and her sole purpose was to attend cocktail parties in evening wear.

Interesting that they have all of that information and still haven't put him in custody. This is a chess game, and we don't want to pin the king until we've wiped the board of all opposing pieces. Im fact, it might be useful to allow him to escape, just to see where he goes and who his allies are.

It won't be long now. OBL is soon to be history. The key is to not openly promote or announce his demise. In fact, it may be best to keep his death among the inner circle and let Bush announce it
post-event sometime around late winter. Treat him as just another dead terrorist with no special attention.
I just want some Special Forces operatives to cut him into a few thousand pieces and feed him to the Afghan pigs. Video it so it can be shown privately to other terrorist leaders to demonstrate for them their ultimate fate.

An Air Force acquaintance showed me a videotape of hip C-130 dropping a Daisy Cutter on a practice run. He told me they were 2 miles down range and 2 miles up when the bomb went off. You could hear it on the video, and see the plane get tossed around when the shock wave hit.
Most impressive

I agree, the only difference I have is that I would announce his death in early winter, say Christmas Day. What a present that would be!
