Survey finds 10 partners before marriage 'normal'

The majority of young people think it is normal for a person to have at least 10 sexual partners before marriage.

A survey has also found that three in 10 believe it is acceptable for a girl to lose her virginity before the age of 15.

Research carried out by Brook, the youth sex advisory service, says there is a "cultural change" in young people's attitudes towards sex.

Some 64% of men and 54% of women agreed that it was acceptable for a person to sleep with more than 10 partners before getting married.

But the survey, which questioned people aged 17 to 25, also showed that they wanted more information about sex and contraception.

Men admitted to getting most of their knowledge about contraception from TV and magazines, while women learned the most from magazines and their mothers.

Half of all the young women surveyed said they wished that teachers had supplied them with more information about preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Brook chief executive Jan Barlow said: "Young people have an increasing number of sexual partners and they are saying that's OK.

"But at the same time they don't have the information and access to services that they need.

"Young people must seek out advice and information in order to make their choices and to understand how to protect themselves both against pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases."

"And the funny thing is, that many of these so called "liberated" people have disastrous sex lives, while us "cold fish" who waited for marriage are having the time of our lives!"

The liberated people will never understand what they have lost. That is their loss though. We could never explain it to them.

We believe in abstinence. We encourage it. We know it works.

It works EVERY SINGLE time you try it!!!! Wow, such odds, eh?

I agree with your assessment and definition of marriage, and God's plan for respective mates -- and giving and receiving unconditionally. You have been blessed with a true soul mate.

In this day of the glorification of hedonistic urges, and the suggestion by "Hef" that the grass may indeed appear "greener" on the other side, there is a better way.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and may you find His comfort through your difficult days...

Hate to be a skeptic but me thinks male high school teachers are pushing this. (excuse the pun) Male college professors have elevated this to an art. Take a feminine perspective on history and current events and VIOLA!! THE BED IS FULL OF YOUNG WOMEN. 67 women in bed is worth 134 virgins in Allahs' heaven .

A trend I've started to notice is "church-girls" or "moral virgins" who finally have had enough. I was surprised by one of my friends who visited me in the summer. She finally had sex with her bf, but I was shocked. I swore she'd stay virginal until marriage.

I am somewhat embarrassed (or maybe not) to say that all the virgins I have "de-flowered" were of the "saving it for something" variety. Yeah, I was something of a scoundrel in my younger years ("younger" meaning right out of high school), but it only takes a sufficiently clever guy to get past the guard of even the most devoutly religious virgins. Seriously. People who think otherwise are deluded. I learned that lesson when I saw girls that I swore would never sleep with any guy get taken by very slick operators.

The interesting thing is, almost no girls regret it afterwards that I've talked to.

Of course we can. I was just pointing out that transgression is one of the dictionary definitions for infedelity.

I appreciate a reasoned dialog, with no rancor.

When talking about virginity why is it people only associate with females?

Only women are virgins (check with an older dictionary)--though a man might be virginal.

Just as only females are maidens--though a man might be maidenly (witness the feminization of American males--it's no wonder "virgin" has morphed into a gender-neutral noun).

However, the reason goes beyond this (as well it might, else why would "virgin" have been feminine in the first place?).

Women get pregnant, not men.

Hence, women always know that the child in whom they invest their nurturing is their own--it will pass the genes of the mother down through the generations.

But the man can never be sure that HE is the father.

However should a man marry a woman who has guarded her virginity, that man can be more confident that his wife will bear only his child--as a woman who has demonstrated the self-control of being faithful to her husband before she has even met him, is wife more likely to remain faithful to her husband after she has met, married, and mated him.

I would never trust a woman who had sex before marriage.

Never.

Even if I were the man with whom she had premarital sex.

[Abstinence] works EVERY SINGLE time you try it!!!! Wow, such odds, eh?

Whether or not it "works" depends very much on the goals of the individual. Given that, I would hardly say it works every time.

I grew up having the same thing drummed into me but it didn't stick, largely because there wasn't a particularly good reason behind it. If I asked "why?" I got lame platitudes which I promptly ignored. If I had heard an objectively valid argument it might have worked, but that isn't what the pro-abstinence people use. Of course, with age and experience I have developed a rational policy on my own, and fortunately without creating any problems for myself or others along the way (I WAS relatively responsible, even in my youth).

I think part of the problem is that many young people are only getting extremist rhetoric from both sides rather than rational and useful information. People seem to forget that education is more useful than forcing dogma, no matter whose dogma it is.

They'd regret it if they realized they lost their chance with me because of it,
