Anyone can phone in a small pox scare.

Now that one person has done it, more will, until we vaccinate for the flipping disease.

How would they be able to determine whether or not somebody on the plane had smallpox? There are no visible symptoms in the early stages.

Exactly. If they are serious about searching the people on that plane for the virus, they will need to quorantine them for quite some time.

King5.com's report is almost identical, but here it is:

Plane detained at Sea-Tac Airport

12/07/2001

KING5.com

SEATTLE - Passengers on board a 747 flight from Taipei, Taiwan are being held on the plane at Sea-Tac International Airport because of a threat of an unknown contaminant.

Officials say an anonymous tip about the threat was given to U.S. Customs officials in New York. The plane, EVA Flight 32 to Newark, New Jersey, with a scheduled stop in Seattle, has been quarantined as a precaution, and none of the plane’s 157 passengers or 14 crew members are being allowed off.

Other operations at the airport have not been affected. Health officials and an interpreter are on the scene. Stay tuned to KING5 News and KING5.com for updates on this story.

URGENT: Anonymous Tip Says Plane At Sea-Tac Has Someone With Smallpox

December 7, 2001

By KOMO Staff

alt

SEATTLE - A plane at Sea-Tac Airport has been sealed off after U.S. Customs officials in New York received an anonymous tip that the inbound 747 from Taipei, Taiwan had someone on board carrying smallpox.

It has not been determined if it is a valid threat yet, but officials are not taking any chances.

Eva Air Flight 32, bound for Newark, N.J. but in Seattle on a scheduled stop-over, has been quarantined as a precaution. No one is being allowed on or off the plane.

The threat was not specific if the person was infected, or carrying a vial of smallpox.

Again, there has not been any confirmation of smallpox on board. Officials are responding to an anonymous tip.

Oh man. I'm sure the people on that plane are haveing fun right now.

Why don't they at least let them into a contained field rather then an enclosed plane?

Interesting. If no one is presenting symptoms, how would the caller know? As for how we'd find out, the MDs would probably test for smallpox antibodies...

Flight from Taiwan, eh? Didn't they just elect a govt that is leaning even further from reconciliation with the mainland? Odds are this is a hoax, but perhaps a subtle threat from Bubba's top fundraiser.

KIRO 7 EYEWITNESS NEWS

An EVA Airlines Boeing 747 has been detained at Sea-Tac Airport due to a report of a possible contaminant on board.

The plane was en route from Taiwan to Newark, with a scheduled stop in Seattle. The plane landed at 1:11 p.m. It was supposed to leave Sea-Tac for New York at 1:30 p.m.

An anonymous tip to U.S. Customs officials at JFK Airport in New York led authorities to suspect there was someone or something on board that might carry a contaminant.

The plane is at a gate but the jetway is not connected to the plane's door, pictures from Chopper 7 show.

There are 157 passengers and 14 crew members on board, an FAA spokeswoman tells KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

A Sea-Tac spokesman says other airport operations are normal.

Saliva tests.

Small pox shows up in the saliva before it appears as pox. This is how people who are recently vaccinated can pass it on to unvaccinated relatives. You get close to spouses and other relatives, then breath each other's breath.

This is also why recirculated air on airplanes is such a danger for spreading the pox.

The threat of small pox is real, but there's a 99.9% chance that this is just a hoax. Any one of us could have called in the same threat and stopped a flight from taking off.
