Arafat: 'Israel Wants Rid Of Me'

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat has claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is trying to topple both him and the Palestinian Authority. He said: "The Israelis are escalating military attacks everywhere in the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank." Asked if Sharon was trying to oust him, Arafat replied: "Not only me - me and the Palestinian Authority."

His comments came after Israel launched air strikes on Palestinian security installations in retaliation for suicide bombings that killed 25 people in Jerusalem and Haifa at the weekend.

Lending support

Israel has warned Arafat to expect daily attacks on his territorities until he cracks down on militants behind deadly suicide attacks in the Jewish state.

The threat came as five people were injured when a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up in Jerusalem early on Wednesday.

Lending fresh US support to Israel's military retaliation, President George W Bush said US allies had an obligation to help bring "terrorists to justice if we want peace in the Middle East".

Raanan Gissin, a senior aide to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, said Israel was prepared to launch an even tougher campaign unless Arafat's Palestinian Authority reined in militants who have been attacking Israelis.

'Cool down'

However Arafat has asked Israel for more time for him to catch Islamic militants. He said 131 had been arrested since the suicide bombings in Jerusalem and Haifa at the weekend.

But he told US TV station ABC News that Israel had to "cool down" to give chance to make arrests. Israel says Arafat is arresting only low-level activists and not those behind the attacks.

Well, that seems fair. Arafat and the PA want to eliminate Israel, and Israel wants to rid the world of them. It will be interesting to see who wins.
