They do. The rudder and horizontal stabilizer still maintain the old "conventional" rigging in addition to fly-by-wire. In full manual reversion, with all computers lost, it is still possible to fly the aircraft to a safe landing.

Thanks, that's a bit of a relief. I didn't know there was a mechanical backup. (Can you tell I've been on more than one plane that was lucky to get on the ground in one piece? :) -- the last one had stuck right slats, it flew in a circle for an hour or so and then the pilot said they thought they'd be able to land it. Talk about white knuckes...)

It could be set to go off a few thousand feet above ground level, this ensuring the plane would go down in a populated area.

Except that a takeoff from JFK would be a very poor choice, if that is your intention. Rockaway is such a narrow peninsula that it was just extremely bad luck that this plane hit a populated area. Rockaway is surrounded by lots of water, and the chances would have been extremely high that the plane would go into the water.

By the way, while I get this post in, let me ask a couple of other questions. Is Wall Street open today? Has there been activity in put options for American Airlines in recent days?

And didn't OBL say in his video or interview that there would be more "terror from the sky" or something like that?

I'm amazed at the number of folks who appear to WANT this to be a terrorist attack. Haven't we gotten back to the basic stats on airline accidents yet? This is likely a very tragic accident, not some terrorist attack.

No one WANTS this to be a terrorist attack, MHG. You're right, it could simply be a very tragic coincidence. However, given 1) we're at war, 2) it was a plane crash, 3) in NYC, 4) today we observe Veteran's Day....

Well, I think it's certainly understandable that people are doing some fierce speculating.

Fox just showed a clip of guys spraying water on what looks like a squashed jet engine sitting on the ground in front of a gas station.

You allege there may be airline workers who are "sleepers."

That is the understatement of the year. These union mechanics are so lazy they start the day with nothing to do and end half finished. And nobody gives a damn, there is no accountability. I still think this was a mechanical failure and not a terrorist attack - my opinion only.

"Agreed. I was responding to an inane "cosmic omens" post."

I'm soooo relieved! LOL!

I tried to flag the *KOOK List, but incredibly one doesn't "officially" exist here on the FR forum, and I had to remove that recipient from my "To" list of names before I could post my reply. Hahahahahahaha

Luggage gets NO scrutiny - that's the sick joke. Only 1 in 10,000 bags is checked that goes in the belly of the plane. And all the hoopla about carry-ons is only a tiny piece of the picture.

ABC HAS PHOTO OF THE CRASHED ENGINE. Please all those familiar with aviation engineering take a look and comment. Engine only, no sign of wing, so engine DID separate. Only question is if there is a small piece of the wing attached. Picture may indicate how separated. Of course stupid ABC keeps zooming in to tiny areas of photo, switching to other graphics, like a damn MTV video, hard to get a good look.

Dustbunny...this may well be an accident. Accidents do happen and the terrorists want us to panic everytime something happens.

I think it is prudent to expect attacks aimed at curtailing travel and shopping up through Christmas.

Perhaps the reason a terrorist attack is being downplayed is to limit the economic impact. For example, I know people who are not going to be shipping presents to relatives for the holidays. If the travel industry, holiday shopping, Fed-Ex, US Mail, all the ripple effects are counted in, a protracted recession becomes even more protracted.

Muslims should be Deported and put in Internment camps.

I would be satisfied with the first half of your suggestion.

Internment first untill we can clear the ones who aren't involved. Of course, anyone who puts money in an offering plate at the local mosque has aided and abetted.

You're right . Earlier report on FoxNews from Pentagon said military aircraft were scrambled to the scene AFTER the impact as part of SOP. Also, earlier reports indicated plane went down just about 2 minutes after wheels up.

Rudy asked for air cover from the military.

Sort of like closing the barn door after the cows are out.

Witnesses saying the tail section came off? Several heard a loud pop? Yeah, I believe the engine fell off, but engines don't just fall off unless their has been some kind of catastrophic maintenance error -- and that's HIGHLY unlikely with the current condition of the airlines. These guys are going over these planes with a fine tooth comb, and then the pilot inspects the engines on the tarmac before boarding.

It's widely known that airports x-ray only a FRACTION of the bags that are checked. They complain that it would take TOO LONG to X-RAY all bags for bombs. No one knows for sure what happened here, but given the propensity of the media, gov't, et al. to hide terrorist activity (TWA 800), I'm going to be extremely cynical. Also bear in mind that Ashcroft just got done talking about how relieved he was that we passed through two state of high alert with no incidents...
