McCain, Bayh Applaud President Bush's Emphasis on Volunteerism
November 9, 2001
-- Senators' "Call to Service Act" Would Create Volunteer Homeland Defense Corps -
Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Evan Bayh (D-IN) today made the following statement:
"We applaud President Bush for issuing a call to service in his address to the nation last night. Declaring that 'Our citizens have new responsibilities,' the President endorsed the creation of new opportunities within AmeriCorps and SeniorCorps programs for public safety and public health efforts.
"Earlier this week, we introduced legislation that would create a new role for AmeriCorps in homeland defense duties. Our legislation would dramatically expand service opportunities under AmeriCorps and create a new short-term military enlistment option. We look forward to working with President Bush to create more opportunities for Americans to serve their country, and to meet the challenges of a new age.
"This cause transcends party or ideology and unites all citizens in service to their nation, in both civilian and military capacities.
"We anticipate working closely with the Administration to enact this legislation. The time is right and the need is urgent."

On Hannity & Colmes last night, McCain TWICE called President Bush, GOVERNOR Bush!
I don't know what it means.
I personally think that a draft is needed for specialists including physicians, intel, and IT types.
I think this nonsense is a trial balloon for the real draft.
There is no earthly reason for expansion of Americorps, so more draft-age citizens can spend eighteen months playing basketball with ghetto kids and cleaning up stooled-out senior citizens in a nursing home.
Methinks its the George Bailey type tire-drive activity, designed for feel-good effect --- OR, its a trial balloon for the draft.
And don't get me wrong -- Bush is not as conservative as I would like.
America is not as conservative as I would like, either.
I was kind of disappointed when he read the riot act to all the turbinates in the UN last week -- on the surface I was happy he was kicking ass and taking names -- but then it destroyed my long-term dream of being out of the worthless UN.
Who knows, Bush may learn from this experience that participation in the UN is counterproductive and stupid; without this war he might never have the opportunity to gain this insight.
Including pro-choice and the general Democratic agenda.
What a wonderful change from someone like, say, Alan Keyes, who's wonderful at sitting off in a distant and exalted corner of the universe, explaining why everyone else in Creation is wrong, and reulsing even people otherwise inclined to support the causes to which he gives lip-service!

W talks the talk, but the walk is rather abrupt.
As for most people being wrong, it is a human condition Christ pointed out to us. It shouldn't surprise you.
I'd say President Bush knows a good idea when he hears one. And I'd say he is a bigger man that McCain because he puts what is good for our country over a slam against McCain. Tho McCain would NEVER do the same for our President.

PS -- seriously, insert a "p" between e and u, and you'll have it.
Keyes is not without his faults too, but W bears the responsibilities of his inactions more strongly as he holds the reins in his hands. His response to tampering with fetus' is largely meaningless as it only takes that work into the realm of free trade. Talk with no walk. This would happen anyways, but a real stance would be an unqualified and clear position against it as opposed to a fudge mark.
Politicians spend their lives telling us one thing and then doing another, yet so few it seems are willing to say "I tell my daughter that abortions are not acceptable." Perhaps many of them look at Keyes and find only a fear in their hearts as to what might happen to them if they did was Keyes does.
