Right. Brenly should've been afraid of letting Schilling pitch to a fearsome slugger like Soriano.

It is called the Major League for a reason. At any time any player is great. Soriano is one of the best young second baseman in the league, just remember Mike Hampton, a pitcher, hit 7 homeruns this year.

Uh huh...and if Brenly had brought in one of those guys, and the pitcher had thrown a gopher ball to take the DB's out of the game completely, you would have somehow retained respect for that decision? Or even better -- you would have thought it was a good move to bring in Johnson on zero-days rest if his first pitch was blasted into the right field spa? It is to laugh.

I had no respect for him in the first place, but if he had done that and the homeruns had been given I wouldn't be calling him an idiot. Because that is what I wanted him to do.

It all comes down to this: When a team gets to a single game for all the marbles, there is going to be one move a manager makes that everything turns on, and the loser will be a jackass in the minds of many for the rest of his life.

Um. If the DB had lost the series it was because of Brenly and his horrible play calling over the series.

The Marlins did NOT "buy" a Championship in 1997, as at least 5 other teams had higher payrolls. They won it fair and square, with a tremendous manager (Jim Leyland) and awesome pitching from an unknown (Livan Hernandez). The only reason it looked like a fix was that the team was immediately broken up and sold by the scum Wayne "the Trashman" Huizenga.

If spending outrageous amounts of money were a guarantee of a ring, then losers like the Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox (although I do like them) and Anaheim Angels would simply rotate titles with the damn Yanks.

Why is it soooo hard for some people to accept that the NY Yankees is the most successful team in professional sports?

Because its irrelevant. Who cares what happened 70-80 years ago when one team had about 80% of the resources of the league...it was stupid for Fox to even bring it up during the game. Out of the 4 franchises they mentioned, only the Packers record bears any significance because it was much harder to pull off.

I'm one of the folks who complained about Brenly. I still think he made some boneheaded calls in this series. But, at this point, who cares? He's now a lovable, sometimes boneheaded manager. He seems to have motivated his troops very well despite his erratic managerial decisions. Much better to be a lovable bonehead than a hated genius (see Jimmy Johnson - and I'm a Cowboys fan) running a championship team.

I won't get into the details of your running debate here regarding the specifics. Who cares? I'm having another drink. And toasting Brenly. And Tony Womack.

Yankee fans in here moaning . . . get a life. Quit acting like the Yankee fans the country hates. The size of the strike zone? Yeah, I'd say you've got some size problems alright . . . .

Good points, esp Jeter being at least even with the bag. Umps typically cover the inside on the hitter. It is definitely a optimum positional view. More times than not, on the outside corner, an ump has to make an educated guess b/c he can't go outside with the catcher and lose his position over the plate.

Don't patronize me, I have been a fan too long for that. Any player can hit a homer at the right time, but some hit more than others. Soriano hit .268 and hit 18 homers in a year that saw one player hit 73. He had the lowest on-base-percentage of all the batters in the Yankees' starting lineup. His previous postseason homer was a opposite-field job over Yankee Stadium's short porch. And Soriano hadn't faced a better pitcher than Schilling all year, with the possible exception of Johnson -- depending on whether he took BP against Clemens.

I had no respect for him in the first place, but if he had done that and the homeruns had been given I wouldn't be calling him an idiot. Because that is what I wanted him to do.

Whoa! Let's have a replay of that statement!

I had no respect for him in the first place, but if he had done that and the homeruns had been given I wouldn't be calling him an idiot. Because that is what I wanted him to do.

Lemme get this straight...you're calling him an idiot because he didn't do what YOU wanted him to do, even though what he did instead brought them the World Championship?

Ladies and gentlemen, there you have it!

If the DB had lost the series it was because of Brenly and his horrible play calling over the series.

Do you think you could have managed the the Diamondbacks to the World Series -- you know, the previous 172 (or so) games?

Only two managers can do that. Brenly was one of them. And he came out on top. And no one will be able to take that away from him.

You hit the nail on the head. The Snakes won despite Brenly.
Nevertheless, I was glad to see Arizona win. Isn't baseball a great and dramatic game?

Actually, isn't Arizona's payroll under $50 million this year? I believe that a number of their long-term contracts (i.e. Randy Johnson's) are backloaded. So this year's payroll isn't too bad. Of course, down the road, the payroll balloons.

yes, the diamondbacks won in spite of brenly, just as the yanks have always won in spite of torre. where to begin with torre? i dont know..... one day, rivera is tired and has a bad ankle, the next, he pitches the last 2 innings instead of one..... mendoza and el duque and whomever else were sitting in the pen in the 8th inning, when rivera was out wearing himself out. obviously, rivera was much sharper in the 8th than the 9th, and how about when jeter and oneill back to backed singles in the 7th? WHY WASNT BERNIE WILLIAMS BUNTING? if he had bunted them both over, guess what! jeter AND oneill score on martinez' single. thats a big run now isnt it?

Not a fan of either team, but it was nice to see former Pittsburgh Pirates Jay Bell, Tony Womack, and Midre Cummings earn their first WS rings. With the economics of the game being what they are, Pittsburgh will probably never win another WS title, so seeing former Pirates go on to success is the best I can hope for.
