Proof of God
A friends question
Posted on 11/04/2001 10:27:45 AM PST by Sungirl
I'd like to ask this question to Freepers to get some answers. A friend of mine will often say she doesn't believe in God....but, I think she is fishing for a reason TO believe. Today she sent me a note from her other friend who states the theory of evolution and that people who believe God put us here are 'brainwashed'. She tells her.... 'Evolution has PROOF...where is the Proof of God?'
Personally, I think evolution has made man evolve....but I also think that the earth and all its resources are not here without a reason and a purpose. There are just too many coincidences to think that it is not planned. Just my thought.

There is no proof of God. That is what faith means and is; believing without proof. Once you have faith, you can see proof of God's works in everything--without faith, you cannot see his works in anything.
It really is that simple.

One of the best sites around to deal with the evolution/creation topic: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/evolution-fact.html

Is it foolish to worship the cause of beauty? Isn't the cause of dis-order like cancer or an organism out of its proper ecological place simply the lack of harmony or order?
In the past, great minds have said that any negative, like ignorance for instance, is simply caused by the absence of some being, like intelligence. If all this is true, this is it foolish to love wholeheartedly [what we Christians call worship] being, or the cause of being, itself?
And if then this still is love foolish, then what love is wise?

"Suppose the cook placed poisonous mushrooms in some of the dishes." Suppose he didn't but someone choked on it anyways. Suppose someone drank an exquisite chianti to the point of alcohol poisoning...Is it the cook's fault?
Suppose your aunt had balls...would you call her your uncle?
I miss your point.

Yeah, it's awesome!

That's an oddly anthrocentric statement. Insects are not beings or organisms like you and I. I've personally watched while one insect fed unaware, actually being eaten by another insect. To apply our human standards of morality or consciousness to insects in support of the view that therefore any creator god would have to be unjust or uncaring seems to be hasty. Silly as it sounds, perhaps insects don't much mind living or dying like insects. Perhaps they really don't much mind anything at all.

It's a trick question to ask for 'proof' (physical evidence) for a non-physical being. The best proof there is, in my opinion, is the historicity of the events of the Christian scriptures, which brings you to the realm of 'Christian Apologetics'.

On the other hand, God the Bible takes Jesus Christ as a physical being --ecall that he was taken up bodily into heaven.
The meaning of all that is both profoundly simple and vastly complex. But leaving most of those things aside, what do you think of the following physical evidence of God:
The Christian church, which the Bible actually calls 'the Body of Christ', is a form of God (specifically Christ) on earth, and so 'proof'.
Note that Christianity is the largest, most powerful, one of the oldest and possibly fastest growing movements in human history. Is this at least some grounds for making its claim to be 'from God' a serious, if possibly arguable, contention? And isn't it a kind of physical proof of God?

I would tell her that there is no scientific proof, but to keep an eye open for evidence.

Here are a few folks who were raised in faith, prayed regularly, studied the Bible, shared their beliefs with others - openly- and by living in faith changed the world.
"It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the Providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and to humbly implore His protection and favor."
-George Washington, 1789
"If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity."
-Daniel Webster, 1821
"We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that 'except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that build it.' I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel."
-
Benjamin Franklin, 1787
"God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever."
-Thomas Jefferson, 1781
"I have a tender reliance on the mercy of the Almighty; through the merits of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am a sinner. I look to Him for mercy; pray for me."
-Alexander Hamilton, last dying words, 1804
This is all the inheritance I give to my dear family. The religion of Christ will give them one which will make them rich indeed."
-Patrick Henry, In his "Last Will and Testament", 1798
"It is fit and becoming in all people, at all times, to acknowledge and revere the Supreme Government of God; to bow in humble submission to His chastisement; to confess and deplore their sins and transgressions in the full conviction that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom; and to pray, with all fervency and contrition, for the pardon of past offenses, and for a blessing upon their present and prospective action."
-Abraham Lincoln, Declaring a National Day of Prayer and Fasting following the Battle of Bull Run.

Sorry to just be focusing on one aspect of your thought, but I suppose its best to approach things systematically if possible.
I think that the creation of any lower forms of life would be justifiable only if their consciousness was in keeping with their form.
I would argue that insects, and most nature, are basically unconscious, that is uncaring and oblivious to their surroundings. Additionally they are practically mechanical, and unthinking, and heartless, not to mention emotionally and for the most part even physically insensitive.
To argue that insects lead cruel and unfair lives is almost tantamount to bemoaning the fact that plants are unfairly disabled by being rooted to one spot.
Please forgive me for my focus on just one of the interesting issues which you thoughtfully raise, but I feel that this is important.

The trick seems to be getting people to actually think. Truly sad isn't it? Even more sad is the fact that you will never get most people to truly think, because they loathe it, like freedom, which most men hate because it means responsibility. Easier to just let some authority make your decisions and do your thinking for you.
Happy thinking!
Hank

Can't resist...
I agree!
I think one thing both the secular and the religious can agree on is the utility of a sound and proper faith.
And I also think that through dialog, both sides can come to an adequate agreement as to just what a sound and proper faith is.

Even my liberal history teacher from last year shocked me the other day when he told me he thinks evolution is BS. He is no creationist, but at least he has sense to know fake science (evolution) when he sees it. Anyway, just wanted to say that. For proof of God, that is a tough one. Check out some books on apologetics.

Sure....cough cough....folks, don't go to talk origins...it is simply a site promoting evolution.
