For warrior symbolism, Bush is pitcher perfect
Orlando Sentinel ^ | 11/4/01 | Kathleen Parker

Bill Clinton may have his Rhodes; Al Gore his book 'n beard. Dick Cheney may have his gravitas; Bob Dole and John McCain their military medals. But George W.'s got a pitch that won't quit.

As wartime symbolism goes, it doesn't get any better than that. His perfect pitch to open the third game of the World Series in Yankee Stadium last week was nothing short of brilliant. It was a public-relations homerun as well as an act of stupendous courage.

Courage, what? With military men and women risking life and limb to defend against terrorism, throwing a lousy ball qualifies as courageous? If you have to ask, you're either in group therapy dealing with high-school rejection issues or teaching sociology at Smith.

I'm not even talking about the courage it took to walk out into a vast open space when you're the leader of the Free World and at least millions of truly insane people want to kill you. No, this is the kind of courage that makes or breaks little boys at an early age, and the failure at which has sent more than one to the bell tower, figuratively if not literally.

As a 20th-century-bred observer (yours truly) has commented often, we never completely transcend our high-school experience. Those who consider themselves successful in high school have a spring in their step throughout their lives, no matter how dismally they may perform later. Conversely, those who consider themselves failures in high school, no matter how much they succeed later, tend to suffer a lack of confidence. Woody Allen may have 10 bazillion bucks and be the best dinner-party guest of the century, but he doesn't invent his neurotic, self-doubting material out of ignorance.

For boys, unfortunately, success -- especially a few decades ago -- was tied to athletic prowess. Oh, we knew who the geniuses were, but who cared? Given a choice between a Bill Gates and a George Bush in high school, well, we'd regret our lack of imagination later. Speaking of which, couldn't Gates just end this business and buy Afghanistan? But I digress.

So when Bush entered the field to toss a pitch -- even though he knew he could, even though he'd warmed up -- he put everything at risk. Every man in America watching, whether from the stands in the Bronx or the nubby-plaid couch in Palatka, knew what he was up against. On a primitive, unspoken level, Bush had put his manhood on the line. Before the nation, before CNN, before Islam and Osama himself.

That, amigos, takes courage.

America held her breath and contracted her own muscles in sympathetic anticipation of certain failure. Could he do it? He did it. He did it perfectly. Bush knows how to wind up, how to aim, how to coordinate hand and eye, how to follow through, how to hit the target, how to accept victory with grace and humility.

George, you da man, and Osama wears a skirt.

We may be the best-fed, most technologically advanced, militarily powerful nation in the history of Earth, but we are still fundamentally animals guided in part by jungle instincts. A man who can throw a perfect pitch can probably throw a pretty good spear. We cheer the fearless leader who can bring home dinner, or protect us from the enemy in the night.

Bush's symbolic act taught America a lesson about the man. He's brave, self-confident and humble. And what does bin Laden's symbolism say about him? We see him either strutting around with big guns or pointing a cadaverous finger toward the heavens. Let's see: A withering digit and big weapon that goes bang. Well.

I have never heard about Clinton raping a women in England. Is there proof of this? Anything documented? He is such a sleeze, that it is probably true. Sure wish somebody would charge him and Hillary with something that would stick and they couldn't get out of. It would be so nice never to hear from them again.

The media also tried to make Pres. Bush "the dumb one", but he's the first President to have a MASTERS digree. Gore went to Viet Nam to help his father get re-elected to the senate.[he lost]. Gore then entered Trinity [sp] school and flunked out! Then he entered law school, and dropped out when he couldn't cut-it. But this stuff was never talked about.

So nice to hear this from a woman! Especially from a Florida paper! Sigh...George W. Bush...greatest President ever! And screw the "transformation" garbage - this man has always been a leader.

Her name is Eileen Wellston and she accused Clinton of raping her at Oxford in 1969. I'm flagging Doug because he has more info on this.

That pitch really was awesome! I've seen W throw out first pitches before, and I was cringing in anticipation of a two hopper to the catcher. But he flung that ball sure and easy and it nailed the strike zone - it even had a little movement breaking to the right towards the middle of the plate. It truly did symbolize the way he, and our country, has "cranked it up a few notches" and focused in on the target.

He met Eileen in a pub and assaulted her. For some reason, the parents were talked out of pressing charges. Clinton was quietly removed from Oxford and thrown out of the country. Doug Thompson of CAPITOL HILL BLUE has confirmed the story through a State Department employee who knew of the incident.

LOL!

A great article, in spite of the inaccuracies already mentioned! It was a great moment, indeed, when President Bush strode out to the mound on Tuesday night and threw that aweome pitch! The stuff of legend and lore!

Thanks, I'd forgotten the details. That was probably his first rape, but not his last. Let's never forget Juanita.

Bravo for posting this Jean. Pres. Bush showed what leadership is all about. He strolled magnificently to the mound! He was a standing target for the devils and did not flinch. seemingly, all the secret service and soldiers guarding him that day were miles away. He showed me a lot and to top it off, he throws a perfect strike (which of course would have left the park if Mac, Sosa or Bonds were at bat).

I am not a baseball fan, but, I had to watch because it
was the Pres. He didn't disappoint. Impressive.

And all the more impressive when you consider that GWB's pitching skill was somewhat inhibited, because he was wearing a bullet-proof wrap-around !!!

I have never seen this about Clinton and I have followed his escapades since 92. I would think that Fox would have had something on about this. I am sure Hannity and a few of the others on Fox would have loved to have had factual information about this incident. Barbara Olson, I am sure, would have mentioned it in her books and her many times on tv. Why has this been kept quiet? The day Clinton was elected (in 92), I said he would be impeached. I waited for the day. And as much as I hate to say it, I was elated when he was. I am so grateful that dubya was elected. It is so nice to have someone with class in the White House, and I am sure if he is ever in need of a job, the Padres would hire him to pitch.
