Damn! The flames from this post are especially numerous today, so I really hate to "pile on," but do you not think that children are able to tell the difference between fiction and reality? When I was in grade school I read fantasy books (full of magic and demons - I stil read these), played AD&D, and listened to heavy metal music. Guess what? I'm still a the Christian my parents raised me to be and you'll find me in church every weekend. I'm still a believer in the loving grace and power of Jesus as the only form of redemption. I do not buy into the New Age "everything is really the same path" crap. I truned out ok. Maybe other kids will too, no?

Better watch it, he'll pick out a Thermos for you... YAAAAY! Someone got it!!!!!!!!! I wrote it, and then thought to myself...."it's going to be a lost reference....no one will remember..." But you did!

I read Mein Kampf and the Communist Manefesto at age 13. It gave me all the armor I needed to counter those lunitics. There is no substitute for knowing your enemies...
To: Demosthenes
I read Mein Kampf when I was 12. Egads, that was the most boring book I ever read. The only harm it did me was the bump I got on my head when I fell asleep reading it.

If Harry Potter turns people into Satanists, what about Star War?

Tough one. And I say that only because I find it hard to believe that if someone is born, lives a full life, and dies (let's just say somewhere deep in the rainforest) without ever being exposed to the bible and christianity that it would be held against them.
I have to believe that they've got some sort of illiteracy or un-exposed to christianity clause in heaven so that true innocents aren't punished for nothing more than being born in the woods.
So in order to confuse you I'll say it works for me.

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.Clinton?

My 13 yo daughter has read all four books at least three times each. I just asked her if she learned witchcraft from the Harry Potter books. It is a good thing she was sittin down or she would have rolled on the floor laughing!! PLEASE!!

Doesn't matter, you are an occultist, anarcho-syndicalist, and moral relativist because the American Taliban say so. They have issued a fatwa against Harry Potter books.

Any book that encourages a child to read has gotta be good! That's a little stronger than I would be. I read 'The Chronicles of Counter Earth" when I was a kid. My mom bought me the first book in the series. That book wasn't so bad, but by the 8th or 9th book it was almost as much pornography as story. If my mom had ever found out!
That said, the author of this piece probably never read any of the Harry Potter books. I finally read book 1 and can only think of two things to complain about.
1. The books are very simplistic. If that is a sixth grade reading level you need to be home-schooling your kids.
2. Gandalf and Aslan did magic (miracles) but did so without the garb we associate with evil witchcraft. Harry Potter can suggest that it isn't witchcraft that is evil, per se, just the use of it. The Potter characters use the traditional garb of evil witchcraft. Maybe Samantha Stevens and Jennie also suggested that the ability to do magic wasn't inherently evil, but they didn't use the garb and accoutriments of traditionally evil witches. Their magic was somehow "other." I would have liked Potter to take the same route. (I do believe witchcraft is evil per-se because I believe the only way human beings can do magic is with demonic help, but that is for another time.)
Anyway, I probably wouldn't encourage my kids to read Potter, but I wouldn't have a fit if they did. The post that started this thread suggests that if we let our kids read Potter western civilization will fall. If Potter is the worst the Church needs to guard against we are in excellent shape.
Shalom

"Pay to the order of Iron Balls McGinty...one dollar and NINE CENTS!"

I totally agree with you just on the basis of:
If it is not of God, it is of Satan.
Potter is not of God

...."it's going to be a lost reference....no one will remember..." It's a bad habit I have. I'll bust out laughing and my wife and kids will look at me and say "what on earth are you laughing at/talking about..."
