Oct. 17 Bill Clintons former press rep has some harsh words for the way George W. Bushs people have been dealing with the press, calling some actions by the current administration troubling and dangerous.
JOE LOCKHART, a White House press secretary under Bill Clinton, gave a talk in New York on Monday evening to some public relations students.
In particular, sources say, Lockhart singled out what he called the shifting explanations that the Bush administration gave to the media as to why they shouldnt run the full text of Osama bin Ladens taped message.
When called by the Scoop, Lockhart re-iterated his comments. The first reason they gave [that bin Ladens speech might contain coded messages] is legitimate. Protecting peoples lives is legitimate. However, the shifting explanations were troubling. If its just that they dont want [bin Laden] to get free airtime, thats very troubling. Its not the governments job to tell journalists what they should do. Thats very dangerous.
Lockhart also singled out recent comments by Charlotte Beers, the new undersecretary of state for public diplomacy. Beers told the Wall Street Journal that it was her task to redefine what America is to the world, adding, This is the most sophisticated brand assignment I have ever had.
The government shouldnt be deciding what makes us good and then advertising it around the world, Lockhart told The Scoop. Were not a product. Were not to be sold. I thought it was a little dangerous if bureaucrats are getting around the table deciding whats good about us.
Lockhart was speaking as one of the panelists at Power, Politics & Prima Donnas, sponsored by the Center for Communications at Rockefeller Center.
Lockhart pointed out to the Scoop that he has been largely positive about the current administration. When asked how he thinks his successor, Ari Fleisher is doing, Lockhart said, Hes doing great. Its in this little thing you sign when you leave. Whenever youre asked, you have to say it. Hes doing great. Its my answer and Im sticking with it.
They really don't see the irony, do they???
(gasping for breath, holding stomach, wiping tears from face)
Stop, Joe, yer killin' me here...ha-haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...
The media may be free to air whatever it wants- but the airways belong to the federal government. If they don't want Bin Laden's propaganda being aired, that's just the way it is. The administration is being nice by asking them not to air that crap...
They don't have to be nice if they don't want to.
Where's the common sense in giving him a forum to spout his hate?
THIS is what is dangerous:
The government shouldnt be deciding what makes us good and then advertising it around the world, Lockhart told The Scoop. Were not a product. Were not to be sold. I thought it was a little dangerous if bureaucrats are getting around the table deciding whats good about us.
Why can't Lockhart see what a moron he is?
I guess hummers in the Oval Office isn't dangerous
I guess giving (selling?) military secrets to China isn't dangerous.
I guess bombing asprine factories to divert attention away from your personal flaws isn't dangerous.
I guess putting national security at risk by carying on with an intern isn't dangerous.
Come on Joe, give us all a break and shut up! Nobody cares what you think.
On top of everthing else, he still hasn't learned any manners. What a graceless jerk. He is the poster boy for the former administration.
Monica was just another intern. She was a stalker. She was a close friend and Clinton was just ministering to her. They did not not have innapropriate sexual relations. It's just spinach dip. The president never asked anyone to lie. It's okay to lie about sex. The president didn't send cruise missiles to distract from Monica's testimony, etc.
The irony here is almost overwhelming. Why does anyone listen to what he has to say anyway, since it's now obvious that all he did in his job was lie the whole time?
