Jets' Robinson faces weapons charge

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Damien Robinson of the New York Jets was charged with possession of an assault rifle found in his car as he entered Giants Stadium.
The arrest took place several hours before the Jets beat the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Robinson, a free safety, played in the game and was arraigned afterward.
Robinson could face up to five years in prison if convicted. He was released Sunday night on $7,500 bail, and the matter will be turned over to the prosecutor.
It was not clear why Robinson was carrying the assault weapon and ammunition in his sport utility vehicle.
Jets spokesman Frank Ramos said Tuesday the team will "let legal action take its course."
The players were off Monday and Tuesday, and Robinson was unavailable for comment. A message was left with his agent, James Gould.
Robinson was entering the players' parking lot at about 10 a.m. with his family when police searched his car, a procedure that has been in place for players, team and game officials and media since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, State Police Sgt. Al Della Fave said Tuesday.
A bomb-sniffing dog checked the vehicle, and "he reacted positively to the presence of explosives" in the back of the car, Della Fave said. Robinson then told authorities he had a rifle, clips and ammunition in the back, Della Fave said.
Police found a Bushmaster .223 assault rifle, three high-capacity magazines that hold 30 rounds each, and two boxes of ammunition containing 100 rounds each.
The rifle and the magazines are illegal under a 1990 state law that bans the sale and possession of many kinds of automatic weapons.
Or just drop rounds all over, until the dogs give up on all the false alarms. Or just sprinkle the powder near the factory gates and parking lots. That kind of thing.
There have been all types of police stories of how Chifi was packing illegally after she became mayor of San Francisco!

I can't believe how many people in person and on the internet have asked me what would be a good gun for home or self protection!
Then a large part of those who want a gun for self protection are stunned that they can't carry a gun concealed in their purse, briefcase or in a shoulder holster in California! Nor that they can't buy a so called assualt weapon to protect their families! They have not paid attention to what has been going on gun wise until now! A couple were really upset that they had to wait (the cooling off period) and have a police check. They wanted those guns on 12 Sept!

I hope you're wrong, but certain "right wing problems" could be taken care of easily with an official proclamation as "terrorist" groups. John Ashcroft scared the hell out of me when he demanded sweeping, permanent laws to fight terrorism. He reasoned that the war will be ongoing, so temporary measures would not suffice. If he wasn't appointed by Bush, everyone here would put him in the same class as Reno. Not that anything would happen right away, but as I'm sure you know, these laws could and most probably will be abused by future administrations.

Yep...and in close and intermediate ranges it has good stopping power. It's a fine round/weapon, but the freakiness has little to do with that.
Also, take the sling swivel off the bottom of the stock and put it on the top, and fix up a simple sling that leaves the rifle "hands off" in the ready position across your chest. The sling (I use 1" green 'tubular nylon' webbing) goes around your neck, both sides of it hang in front. This is how pros do it. In this way, you can go through brush with your left hand feeling ahead, or checking your map, or opening doors, whatever, but your right hand is always on the stock and finger near the trigger ready. You can also let go of both hands in the event of a malfunction to go straight to your pistol.
You can also put your right arm through the sling and slide the rifle under your right arm to your back muzzle down for climbing obstacles, then get it right back to "ready" without having to unsling it.
Allow just enough slack when it's hanging level in front to permit the rifle to go to your shoulder smoothly, no more.
IOW, a combat sling is not some stiff leather contraption made to permit ultra accurate firing freehand. You will NOT be standing still and shooting! If you are standing, you had better be running to cover! The combat sling is there to keep the weapon attached to you at all times "at the ready" but still allow use of your hands for other tasks.
