Jets' Robinson faces weapons charge
Associated Press
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Damien Robinson of the New York Jets was charged with possession of an assault rifle found in his car as he entered Giants Stadium.
The arrest took place several hours before the Jets beat the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Robinson, a free safety, played in the game and was arraigned afterward.
Robinson could face up to five years in prison if convicted. He was released Sunday night on $7,500 bail, and the matter will be turned over to the prosecutor.
It was not clear why Robinson was carrying the assault weapon and ammunition in his sport utility vehicle.
Jets spokesman Frank Ramos said Tuesday the team will "let legal action take its course."
The players were off Monday and Tuesday, and Robinson was unavailable for comment. A message was left with his agent, James Gould.
Robinson was entering the players' parking lot at about 10 a.m. with his family when police searched his car, a procedure that has been in place for players, team and game officials and media since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, State Police Sgt. Al Della Fave said Tuesday.
A bomb-sniffing dog checked the vehicle, and "he reacted positively to the presence of explosives" in the back of the car, Della Fave said. Robinson then told authorities he had a rifle, clips and ammunition in the back, Della Fave said.
Police found a Bushmaster .223 assault rifle, three high-capacity magazines that hold 30 rounds each, and two boxes of ammunition containing 100 rounds each.
The rifle and the magazines are illegal under a 1990 state law that bans the sale and possession of many kinds of automatic weapons.
Probably thanks to the NRA's Project Exile too!
Well, he does have excellent taste in weaponry, anyway :)
Oh boogers, you beat me...
LOL - well put!

yeah, they sniff for nitrates.
And now we are entering the "anti-terrorism highway checkpoint" phase of American history.
That is a fact
Guess who is going to go down for the weapons found? "Right wing gun nuts" like you and me.
At least here in the People's Republic of Connecticut that will not be a problem as I maintain my pistol permit and that entitles me to transport pistols and long guns in a manner that does not alarm the public. Of course getting accross state lines to another state brings up some very unpleasent questions.
We all know where this is going. Maybe I should get back to writing my RKBA novel, it looks like we will be next on the target list.
Hey the leftists would rather get the right wing Americans who believe in the Right to Keep and Bear arms tan fight OBL, al Qaeda and the Taliban.
Woek on your book it will be needed.
Sttay well - stay safe - stay armed - Yorktown
maybe he was going to carry the rivalry between the jets and dolphins a bit further?
'happiness, is a warm (bang bang shoot shoot) gun!!!!!!!!!
I knew I left New Jersey for a reason. I'm New Jersey born and raised, but then I discovered freedom (in Wyoming).
is it a choice between that and a deer-rifle? Or between that and nothing? Point is that while "assault rifles" are blasted as being near-omnipotent death-machines, they are at the lower end of the rifle rounds...but I know that you know that.
there are those...and they're still very very low on the criminality list.
Just walking the lot with a trained dog, looking for bombs and such.
In NYC, at least up until the early 1990s, it would add about a year and a half to your sentence if you were caught carrying a firearm but failed to murder someone with it.
The article states that he was entering the parking lot at 10:00 AM; along with others that were searched.
And the .308 does have a lot more energy than the .223. But there's more to effectiveness than kinetic energy. In terms of fight-stopping power, the .223 is usually equal or (with FMJ bullets) better. How can this be? The edge the .223 bullet has occurs with the 1-in-7 twist; the .223 bullet is torqued so much that it shatters on impact. The "pig tests" done by the US military proved the .223 (5.56mm) projectile so superior to the 7.62 in this respect that most segments of the Army lost all interest in the .308 for anything but sniper rifles. Thus the switch to the .223 for the SAW and the Marines adoption of the H-BAR version of the Colt. When a bullet shatters inside a human (or pig) target, it has greater wounding effect than a mushrooming bullet with each fragment creating a wound channel all its own. Sort of like a super-duper Glaser. The .223 fired from a modern (1-in-7 twist) rifle will make a tiny entry wound, but inside you have a mess that is greater than a .308 will produce (with human beings).
I am going to change the NFL stadium shooting to a shooting at a major civil rights rally by an "oppressed peace loving moderate religion".
The (bogus) "right wing militia kook's" motive will be even more clear, the "gun check road check points" will be even more realistic.
That incidence shook up a lot of construction workers who worked at refineries!
A friend has a son, who is a police officer. He went to the range for his continual qualifications. Came home showered and went to his local airport to board a plane to go on vacation.
This was before the 9/11 thing. This young man had a baseball hat on and a moustashe. That sets off a profile. They took his carry on and ran swabs on it. That picked up the residual gun powder even after his showering. They had him over in a private area and cops were called in. Two of the cops were fellow cops, and they started laughing as they jokingly handcuffed him. Then they explained what had happened as they were on the range with him. They were covered with the unseen residue! Then the young cop finally got on his plane!
Talk about screwed up profiling!
Still, if I have to go for a long fight with no chance of resupply, I'd rather take 390 rounds of 5.56 in four mag pouches, (13x30), than 180 rounds of 7.62, (9X20) in the same space at the same weight. IOW, you can carry double the ammo in 5.56.
