Yes - so now we know.

I always suspected that the dogs could sniff out powder/propellents.

I hope you're wrong, but certain "right wing problems" could be taken care of easily with an official proclamation as "terrorist" groups. John Ashcroft scared the hell out of me when he demanded sweeping, permanent laws to fight terrorism. He reasoned that the war will be ongoing, so temporary measures would not suffice. If he wasn't appointed by Bush, everyone here would put him in the same class as Reno. Not that anything would happen right away, but as I'm sure you know, these laws could and most probably will be abused by future administrations.

Not if they're in a metal case/can. Ammo contains powder in a hermetically sealed container, the crimped bullet is the seal. That means no gas/vapors go in and out. What the dogs sniff is the bore cleaner/powder solvent. If you get it on your hands it soaks in. It's not going to come out in the shower. The dogs can't tell the difference between powder solvent and Kiwi shoe polish.
