U.S. says bus crash apparently "random" event
Reuters ^ | Wednesday, October 3, 2001

WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - The crash of a Greyhound bus in Tennessee on Wednesday appears to have been a "random" event unrelated to last month's terror attacks on the United States, the Transportation Department said.

The department believes "it was a random incident not related to the September 11 terrorist attacks," said Dave Longo, a spokesperson for the Federal Motorcarrier Administration, a division of the Transportation Department.

But he said there were conflicting reports "and we are waiting for more details to come in from the field."

Greyhound Lines suspended bus services across the United States after at least three people were killed in a crash that television reports attributed to a passenger attack on the bus driver.

Good point. I understand. I don't think this is a clue that there is more going on then what we are being told. Just a clue that these terrorists, as well coordinated as they proved to be, sure have us on the edge!

I wouldn't be surprised to see amtrack service halted because of a fist fight at this point!

(compulsive time taking)

Perhaps he was losing his nerve. Despite what we think, I would bet many of these whack jobs have second thoughts before the big moment of glory.

The local news channel in Nashville is reporting that the bus driver stated the perp was of "middle eastern origin," and is now reported deceased. (This was reported in a LIVE interview with an attending physician wo was treating the driver.) He had been reported alive awhile ago. They are checking to see if he was infected by any biological agents. He is said to have boarded the bus in Kentucky.

Sorry. There's so much happening on so many threads, I've given up reading anything past a reply I see the need to comment on. I used to scan down to see if anyone else already picked up on whatever I wanted to comment on, but I'm on overload.

Sorry for piling on.

"my guess is he just got the wrong date..."

That reminds me of a story that Paul Harvey had on once about a group of terrorists who had a bomb on a timer in a vehicle. They had set the bomb for one time zone while they were operating in another. Anyway, I guess someone was confused and the bomb went off one hour early while the terrorists were still in the car.

I'm close to the point of deleting Drudge from my bookmark lists. Too often, he changes a headline to sensationalize it, or to misrepresent the article. I'm tiring of him.

Since data was still sketchy earlier today, this was no more an over-reaction than shutting down all air traffic immediately after the WTC and Pentagon incidents. All you folks claiming over-reaction would have had cows if suddenly we had several more bus-type incidents soon after this first.

There are some stragglers around. LOL, I love the word image. Every organization has a few they have to drag along in the effort.

The truth is, the government just doesn’t know how to protect us. We’re all on our own.

busses = kisses
buses = more than one bus; several vehicles used to carry multiple passengers

Sorry to be picky about this, but the word busses has been mis-used and misspelled since the government started transporting children to schools outside of their neighborhoods in the 60s.

On Monday, ABC News was reporting there was a plot to take down Sears Tower in Chicago by a terrorist cell. Officials have denied that story saying ABC got it wrong. Thoughts?

Given a choice between the word of “officials” and “ABC”, I don’t trust any of them.

Maybe this guy was waiting for a hazardous waste truck to go by and crash the bus into the truck. Or maybe this was a diversion so that something more sinister could be done with other trucks/vehicles when all the police etc were looking at the bus incident and therefore the real threat would be undetected.

Gonna be a long drive back and forth,

Not so long. I live north of Milwaukee, and we frequently drive to and from Mahwah, NJ in one day. It's a nice drive. At least you won't have to "go through" Chicago, the part of the trip we hate the most! LOL

From the story in The Oregonian:

Brandon said the driver told him one passenger on the bus, who had been polite and spoke with a foreign accent, got up several times to talk to him. He told the medical examiner the passenger then "accosted" him, using a box cutter.

The passenger then grabbed the steering wheel, forcing the bus into the oncoming lanes of the interstate before it crossed the road and tipped over onto its right side, the medical examiner said.

Militants seeking independence for Croatia have struck inside the U.S. in the past. In December 1975 Croatian nationalists were suspected of planting a bomb in a luggage locker at La Guardia Airport, killing 11 people and injuring 75. Less than a year later, Croats hijacked a TWA jet traveling from New York City to Chicago and eventually diverted it to Paris. As part of that operation, the group also planted a bomb at Grand Central Terminal, which killed a police officer who tried to defuse it. In June 1980 Croatian "freedom fighters" detonated a bomb inside the museum at the Statue of Liberty, but no one was injured. All told, Croats committed more than 20 acts of terror in the U.S. from 1976 through 1980.

...but I have to cross state lines every day to go to work, and somehow, I lose my second amendment rights when I do so

Sheesh! I just remembered that I have an uncased .22 rifle in the trunk of my car. My husband was supposed to shoot a raccoon for a neighbor on the way to work, and we forgot to stop! The rifle is legal. Being out of the case is not.

Oooops.... :0 :)

No problem. I shoulda known better. I usually like to spell right [except when I'm emphasizing something..., grammar is another story]. Ya know, I took a second look at that word and said, "ummmm...." and let it go. Oh well...

AND THEN AGAIN, ask a "liberal" and he'll want to give the terrorists "busses" :) :)

Do you think there might be even the remotest possibility that the man intended to act at a particular time? A time when others were also supposed to act?

Perhaps he was to act at 4:13PM instead of AM and got confused?
