POST BOOMERS/PRE X - finally, a thread just for us - Thread 6

Posted on 10/02/2001 9:09:10 PM PDT by WIMom

Last night, there was an anti baby boom thread that started with a rant, and before some disruptor trashed it, some of us who were born at the tail end of the baby boom - from 1956 to 1964 - were having some nice recollections. The things that we seem to have in common are the following:

1. We were too young to serve in Vietnam, but remember the news.

2. As far as we're concerned, the music, television and popular entertainment and heroes of the 60s were and still are a matter for personal taste, and don't represent the shining apex of all civilization, icons to be revered by generations to come - in short, the Beatles were just a band that some might not like, and old Trek was cheesy and not well written.

3. Old boomers came into adulthood at the ideal economic circumstance - we've had to work for ours.

4. Our clothes and music tended to be lighthearted, and we are more conservative/libertarian as a whole than the older boomers.

So post your memories of tunes, movies, shows, fashions, school stuff, etc.

And enjoy yourselves!

Thanks to one_particular_harbour for the fantastic idea!

I vote for "Brady Boomers" I like it the best so far.. I represents the culture of our time. At least the innocent part of our culture.

Here's the story, of a generation
Who was similar but never quite the same
They were neither... GenX nor Boomer
But still they had no name.

Here's the story... of a lost pop culture
Whose wide lapels were bitchin' to a throng
But they were clueless to the things they had in common
No title for their song.

'Til the one day when their thread scrolled on a website
And they knew that it was more than just a rumor
Thirty million... growing up on Zeppelin
And that's the way we all became the Brady Boomers.

Kinda lame, I know, but I've got some other ideas for verses. Maybe you all do too.

If we just could think of some music for it... ;^)

"Is this to "The Beverly Hillbillies" tune?"

Hmmm... could be. Either that, or the "Bel Arabs."

Here's the story... of an adolescence
With all the boys afraid to show their ears
So they grew their hair long, parted in the middle
Like girls had done for years.

This could be habit forming.

... speaking of "midi's" did anyone have the coat that zipped off from "maxi" to "midi" to "mini".. (I was INTO coats..)

I had a blue maxi coat and it didn't zip off. The boys at school were always telling me my slip was showing when I wore that coat.

We all know people, within a range, let's say, 4 years younger, or 4 years older shared common experiences.

A 17 year spread seems a bit much. There is also much overlap.

I agree with you that 17 years is spreading it a little far. I certainly don't feel I share much in common with people 17 years my senior. I used to get upset when people refered to me as a boomer since I couldn't possibly have shared similar experiences with people of that age group.

It is my belief that world events and the age you are when they occur are what define a generation. Four years younger or older would make much more sense than a 20 year span.

Hey, I didn't make up that name. I don't want to be known as a "wedgie" either. I may have given a few or even received a few as a kid but I don't want to be one.

What a letter, sums it up neatly.

What a thread, great fun reading through these memories.
I, too, vote for Brady Boomers. Very appropriate.

How many in our age group, find themselves, literally, running away from the boomer culture?

My wife and I moved to a rural community in '91 and now find ourselves raising horses and Longhorn cattle. Not exactly what the boomers are striving for.

Has anybody mentioned Mr. Magoo? Rocky & Bullwinkle?

"Has anybody mentioned Mr. Magoo? Rocky & Bullwinkle?"

Saw Moose and Squirrel, not sure about Magoo.

How about the alliterative cartoons?

Mighty Mouse: "Here I come, to save the daaaayyyy!"
"I'm bing, Bing, BING, Ricochet Rabbit!"
Fearless Fly: "My glasses! Without them, I'm helpless."
"Klondike Kat ALWAYTH get hith mouthe!"

Anyone remember Beanie and Cecil, and their nemesis, Dishonest John?

For some reason Mighty Mouse made me immediately think of Underdog.
I can't quite remember the jingle tho.
How about Speedy Gonzales?
Or my all-time favorite Foghorn Leghorn?

Magoo was a blind, old guy who was always avoiding the near disasters that were caused by his blindness.

"For some reason Mighty Mouse made me immediately think of Underdog.
I can't quite remember the jingle tho."

"Deep in the heart of the big city, lived a humble, lovable soul named Shoeshine Boy."

Shoeshine Boy shines a shoe. Says:

"All finished, Sir."

Businessman in hat looks down and flips a quarter to Shoeshine Boy. Says:

"Thanks Shoeshine Boy. You're humble and lovable."

Shoeshine Boy: "Bless you, Sir." Bites quarter.

But whenever there was a call for help:

Woman's voice (o.s.): "Help! Help help!"

Shoeshine Boy became in real life:

(Phone booth explodes)

UNDERDOG!

cue music:

Ooo wa-ooo wa-ooo, wa-Oooo wa-ooo wa-ooo...

When criminals in the world appear
And citizens hearst are filled with fear
The call goes out both far and near
For UNDERDOG!
Underdog!
UNDERDOG!
Underdog!

Speed of lightning
Roar of thunder
Fighting all who
Rob or plunder
Underdog!
UNDERDOG!
