POST BOOMERS/PRE X - finally, a thread just for us - Thread 6

Posted on 10/02/2001 9:09:10 PM PDT by WIMom

Last night, there was an anti baby boom thread that started with a rant, and before some disruptor trashed it, some of us who were born at the tail end of the baby boom - from 1956 to 1964 - were having some nice recollections. The things that we seem to have in common are the following:

1. We were too young to serve in Vietnam, but remember the news.

2. As far as we're concerned, the music, television and popular entertainment and heroes of the 60s were and still are a matter for personal taste, and don't represent the shining apex of all civilization, icons to be revered by generations to come - in short, the Beatles were just a band that some might not like, and old Trek was cheesy and not well written.

3. Old boomers came into adulthood at the ideal economic circumstance - we've had to work for ours.

4. Our clothes and music tended to be lighthearted, and we are more conservative/libertarian as a whole than the older boomers.

So post your memories of tunes, movies, shows, fashions, school stuff, etc.

And enjoy yourselves!

Thanks to one_particular_harbour for the fantastic idea!

Funeral for a Friend, best song. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, best album, IMO.

I know. I laugh at the kids at work. They are all wearing the stuff we wore. A couple years ago I was in Japan and laughed out loud when I walked into a shop and it was full of brand new clothes that were EXACTLY like what I wore in jr hi and high school. Shiny shirts, those chevron knit shirts, and the double knit pants with the little seam or tuck down the front. (My mom called them "helenca yarn")

I was amazed at the fact that all these young teenage Japanese girls were buying up stuff that looked like it belonged in a yard sale... laugh...

I'm late to this thread so I'm curious. Did anyone coin a name for our group(too young to boom, too old for x)?

My best friend and I coined the term "Tweeners" for those of us born between the Boomers and Gen Xers.

God, you realize y'all are responsible for girls all over the country trying to sound like you....

In her - and my - defense, what came to be known as "Valley Girl" lingo is actually surfer talk. In fact, when I was a teenager, going to the Valley Girl high school, we called it "Malibu Mellow."

Hey - anyone else remember Wednesday night cruising on Van Nuys Boulevard?

OMG!! what am I doing up this late reading this thread? Saber some have suggested that we should be called "tweeners" but I think that is too generic and could be used for any generational bubble. We have got to stand up for Brady Boomers!! It is nicely specific and understandable without explanation. Should I start the petition or will you? That is how we made changes in high school==start a petition!!

Remember 3-layered jello, the name escapes me.

Jello 1-2-3 is what you're thinking of.

My #1: Watching the space program grow before our very eyes. Getting to miss class all through grade school to see the launches. Old enough on July 21, 1969 to see "One small step for man...", and to know just how special the moment was. Young enough at the time to be building Apollo models. - JR is from the Delivery Room Class of '61.

Remember when Jim Croce died? For some reason I remember that really well and I was very sad.

Saber, your HTML is correct in your post 186 - me thinks that the site that you tried to steal the Cheryl Ladd picture from is protected. Forgot to mention that - sometimes sites have a protection device that has their images protected.... Try using a boring image.

Here is your format, < replaced with { - {img src="http://www.aplusbabes.com/Actresses/Cheryl_Ladd/014.html"}

I was in college when the "preppie" look was the rage. I remember the bars having label contests to see who was preppiest of all.

Was a DJ at our college radio station and played lots of Souixsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Clash, Dead Kennedys, Husker Du, The Ramones, X, Go-Go's, The Fixx, A Flock of Seagulls, Eurythmics.

For someone who's a trained classical musician, this was my awakening!

I has the football coach for biology. He would go into his little back office behind the lab and watch football films with the team and we did crossword puzzles. No wonder I hate biology.

I vote for "Brady Boomers" I like it the best so far.. I represents the culture of our time. At least the innocent part of our culture.
