DUBAI, Sept 29 (Reuters ) - Qatar's al-Jazeera television said on Saturday Afghan security forces had arrested five people, including three Americans, near the border with Iran with maps of sites of Osama bin Laden's group.
It said a military source from bin Laden's al Qaeda group telephoned its correspondent in Islamabad and said the three Americans were from the U.S. Special Forces and had modern weapons and some maps of al Qaeda sites.
"The five were arrested, three Americans and two Afghans, who were trained in the U.S. Special Forces and have U.S. citizenship. The three Americans are also from the U.S. Special Forces," the correspondent quoted the source, who he said usually called journalists, as saying.
"They had some modern weapons and some maps of al Qaeda sites," the source was quoted as saying. "They were on a reconnassiance mission to know the territory of al Qaeda".
He said pictures of the men would be released soon. ((Gulf newsroom, +971 4 391 8301, fax +971 4 391 8335, dubai.newsroom@reuters.com))
DOHA, Sept 29 (AFP) - Afghan security forces have captured three members of the US "special forces" and two Afghans in Afghan territory near the border with Iran, Qatar's Al-Jazeera TV reported Saturday...AFP
Exactly -- that possibility grows by the second..it doesn't take long in this info age to produce pics...nothing on that front
In the Soviet war, they became experts at unassing an AO before the angry Hinds could reach them.
If true, the 5 prisoners could be taken by 5 fast patrols in 5 directions to prevent rescue.
That was my first thought.
Considering the source of this information, I can't help my doubts at the moment.

I will pray with everyone else, but these people just got a news report in the last 24 hours that special forces were on their soil, and voila, they've captured three of them. I am very suspect of the "modern weapons" description - very general, and reminiscent of "I'm just a cave man...your modern ways confuse and frighten me!" - a little too Phil Hartman to swallow whole. When they produce the pictures they say they'll have (try finding a camera in Afghanistan), I'll be more inclined to believe it. For now, I'll wait on word from the good guys.
There will be no "negotiating" with the Taliban, and there shouldn't be. It is painful losing anyone, but how would that look? They're counting on Americans not having the stomach for this, just like the Japanese in WWII - this is war, just like that was. As painful as it is to hear, we can't collapse because they might have three of our guys.
If they have them, it may take 24 hours to get a copy of a photo out, since the 5 may be taken to 5 remote caves for safeguarding and preventing rescue.
It also coulg be propaganda to make us distrust them as talibon is ticked they said they would be with us.
While I'm not going to assume it is necessarily false, it would do us well to remember how Iraq's government controlled media kept reporting on hundreds of American soldiers were being slaughtered daily during the gulf war. I can't imagine Afghanistan's government controlled media would be any more committed to the truth.
If however this is true, all prayers for our men.
Autumn Afghanistan sunrise...
