Americans give President Bush strong marks for the way he has responded to the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, pushing his job-approval scores to the highest levels of his presidency, according to polls conducted earlier this week.

A CBS News survey of 1,041 adults, conducted Sept. 11 and 12, reported that 76 percent of Americans approved of the way that Mr. Bush has handled the government's response to the attacks. That helped raise his job-approval rating to 72 percent, the poll showed. An NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll of 618 adults showed that 80 percent approved of Mr. Bush's handling of the crisis and only 8 percent disapproved.

Yes!

I actually had a totally liberal friend of mine say that she's "glad Bush is President" because "they [Republicans] don't care who the hell they bomb!"

OK. Well, not exactly what I had in mind, but...

...I challenged her about that and she relented, finally saying that, what she *really* meant was that KKKlintoon would be saying, "should we, shouldn't we..." [except in bombing aspirin factories in the Sudan after the "hummer-in-the-oval-office" broadcast].

I guess the continuous harping on Bush by the media isn't working.

The CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll also found that 66 percent would be "willing to surrender some of the civil liberties guaranteed Americans in order for the government to crack down on terrorism," while 24 percent said they would not and 10 percent had no opinion.

Now what the heck made them ask this question, and this scares me to death. 2/3 of the US population obviously does not have a clue what their rights are. Or have no clue that when you give them up, you NEVER get them back.

Ben Frankiln had it exactly right, this sickens me, but we must stick together, but on this part, not my freedoms you don't!!!

I don't really care about the polls. Right now, my view of Bush is "Incomplete".

I'll back him now, and bite my tongue one way or the other about him. All the domestic issues outside of freedom are unimportant for now.

The BIG issues are this.

1. It's Day 4. We have some minor progress so far on intelligence. What are we going to do, and how quick?

2. How do we prevent or contain this without giving up our freedoms?

BTW - I'm sick and tired of hearing about Klinton on this site right now. He's a nothing, a non issue.

does for me that's for sure. What's that quote by ben franklin? "He who gives up a little liberty for a little safety deserves neither liberty nor safety" or something along those lines.

It's been just about three days so far. I know they need time to lay out attack targets and plans, but I hope to hell that Bush shoves a cruise missile or two up somebody's ass in the next 24 hours, just as a calling card.

He could then go on TV to announce something like "That was just us clearing our throats, assholes. Just getting warmed up over here, so stand by."

Do that, and watch your polls Mr. Bush. We're getting a little tired of no retaliation at all so far. It'll be a drawn-out campaign, but time's a-wastin'.

Yep, that's what's important here, regardless of the 5-10,000 dead Americans, to make sure that W gets good numbers. The fate of the nation is irrelevant, as long as we stand a good chance of obtaining total primacy in the next election.....
(Jesus...did I accidentally log on to DU after the 'toon bombed the aspirin factory?? Integrity don't mean squat, as long as the numbers are good. Oh, well...thank God the ragheads killed a few thousand Americans to give W's numbers a boost; I guess some good came out of it...)

I'm with you Dan. My greatest fear is that Bush, like his father, won't have the balls to finish the job. I would be ashamed to be an American if when this is over, Saddam Hussein still lives. Having said this, I am willing to give 100% support to President Bush, including re-enlistment and deployment.

The least responsible person for Saddam's existence is President Bush. Without his leadership, he'd be stronger than ever, and Bush did everything he possibly could to remove him from power and force.

No, Pres. Bush is the last person I would blame for Saddam.

I am not thinking of poll right now. Bush has been great. I hope he doesn't get swayed by the UN or other leftist organizations. WE HAVE TO WIPE THIS EVIL!

I blame the Mid-East nations that told former Pres. Bush that they would pull their support should he order that the troops go into Baghdad. I believe we would have gone but without the airports and resources that we were getting from the surrounding countries, we might've lost a lot of lives and not been able to complete the job.

You know this may sound stupid .. but I'm just wondering .. is there a poll out about what the people think about the like of Jennings and Rather ... hmmmm

that would certainly be on better target. Also the US, under Clinton, and our allies lost resolve on keeping Sadam isolated and destroying weapons of mass destruction. The inspectors were run out by Saddam.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Benjamin Franklin, 1759.

That poll is as phony as a three dollar bill. We don't have to give up neither Liberty, nor Security, we can keep them both.

That's what the second amendment is for. "A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed." --Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

Luke 22:36 (KJV) --Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

Got sword? (M1 Garand)

No mercy, no quarter!
May the jihadists burn in hell for eternity, and the sooner they arrive the better!

Fantastic point. They would most certainly not like the results of their poll. "Do you think reporter X is fair and accurate? Does reporter X appear to be telling the news, or reporting it? Does reporter X appear to have bias?"

But the survey did find that 80 percent of Americans, shaken by the magnitude of the terrorist attacks, were "willing to give up personal freedoms for more security at public places," like airports.

Baaaaaa!
