Woodland Hills, California (Los Angeles suburb)

Streets eerily lacking in traffic. About half the restaurants closed, business down significantly in those remaining open. Major shopping malls closed. A lot of talk about the incident.

I wonder if all this activity is just a shade overdone. I can see the terrorists attacking, say, the Mall of America, but not the Westfield Shopping Town in Woodland Hills; there's just no symbolism there.

Fresno California, airport closed and streets around it as well, the shopping malls are even closed, as well as government offices. The one eerie thing I have noticed is the quietness. The silence around my neighborhood is very strange indeed.

In Kansas City, the Federal Building downtown was closed and access/traffic all around the building was restricted. A news conference was held and rumors of a smallpox release were denied. Also seciury was tightened around the water supply stations. Two of the largest malls in the area were closed down. There were stories of people being stranded at KCI, the major airport here and people were warned to stay away from it. I just heard from my sister who lives in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that the bridge into Canada from Sault Saint Marie has been closed and she has heard that the big bridge from the lower part of Michigan has also been closed.

Downtown Orlando, FL

Pretty quiet. Courthouse and federal buildings shut down. Not many people out on the street. I think a lot of people went home. Disney parks are closed. No one allowed in, even back areas. My father works there and says they are searching vehicles leaving from "backstage" areas. I've heard lots of blood donations are going on too.

FAA flight ban extends to offshore helicopter activity for the oil industry, so our transportation is essentially shut down. I'm stuck here!

So many people lined up to donate blood in Phoenix that many had to be sent home. The blood facilities are overwhelmed with donations.

Gov. Jane Hull was broadcast saying that the West is not threatened. However, government workers can go home if they wish. The highway over the Hoover Dam is closed. The Palo Verde nuclear power station is locked down. The airport (Sky Harbor) is a ghost town. Airplanes are not allowed next to the terminal. Media are kept away.

My email is slow today but everywhere people are crying for the victims. Pearl Harbor was a military installation. These people were defenseless. This is war.

Oklahoma City... Airport closed. Massive run on gas stations. Rumor is that refineries have been shut down and gas prices will sky rocket. Lines are 30 minutes to buy gas anywhere in the city.

Richmond, Virginia - Word has gone out that there is a nationwide call for gathering to pray between 8:00 and 8:30 tonight. Malls closed. MCV hospital helipad prepared to receive injuries from the Pentagon incident if necessary. I was on my way to give blood, but heard on the radio that all of the donation centers are swamped. Malls will be setting up tomorrow through Friday for special blood drives. Saw city police staking out the CSX railroad yards. Carriers from Norfolk/Hampton Roads sent adjacent to DC and NY to secure the areas. Naval base areas buttoned up tight. Got a call this morning from my younger brother, who lives in Brooklyn and works in the West Village in NYC. He said they watched the whole thing from their 8th floor office windows about 30 blocks away. Said that people were already very panicky in the streets. Shortly after I hung up with him, the buildings collapsed.

Suburbia is fairly normal. Lack of a single plane is strange.
I saw a CalTrans truck driving in a wash, and firetrucks out of their stations. At least two major buildings in Downtown were evacuated.

Rural Missouri town -- no panic -- everyone going about their business. Our boss did have all employees go fill their gas tanks, and recommended getting groceries. My family and I are still full up of Y2K stuff. We've used a little, but not much. I'm glad we're not in a city now.

I just stepped outside. How unusual no contrails criss-crossing an almost clear azure blue sky.
I live on a dirt road that has maybe one car per hour go by -- it is almost too quiet today.

I went into my "Y2K" mode, filled the tank and bought as many groceries and bottled water as I could afford around noon. Had to go back into town at 3PM -- the gas stations had a car at every pump. I'm sure up by the interstate there are long lines.

It's days like these I am glad I am removed from civilization ... other than my needed lifeline to FR. Take care my friend.

Montgomery County, Maryland (most important DC area suburb, located on north/northwest border of the Nation's Capital):

Local police have issued "community alerts" and increased patrols.

Local schools closed 1 1/2 hours early (for no apparent good reason).

All federal government agencies closed around noon today.

Maryland state government neglecting West Nile Virus epidemic, which has spread to local citizens now.

Liberals, gun control freaks and other gun-haters wringing their hands while waiting for government (protection?) help.

Traffic is unusually light.

I'm headed out to run a few errands and do some shopping now...

People are SCARED. My MIL was to have furniture delivered today. The furniture store had a recording on their answering machine stating that 75% of their employees had stayed home due to the events of today. This is in Phoenix. Husband reports there is very little traffic on the streets. A business trip scheduled for me by my home office was scuttled.

This was a huge psychological blow to the American public.

I'm happy to report the San Diego Zoo is open.

But I'm just here on family business. Mountaingirl, rintense, please post if anyone hears from NYC GOP Chick or RightsidedNYer. I sent them FReepmail asking for them to post when they could, and I have been praying for all the souls in NYC and at the Pentagon and in the plane in Pennsylvania.
