Tokyo stocks ended lower in volatile trading Wednesday, with the Nikkei briefly plunging toward 60,000, as media projections showed Democrats had regained control of both houses of the U.S. Congress.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 893.23 points, or 1.42 percent, from Monday at 62,188.63. The broader Topix index finished 34.90 points, or 0.89 percent, lower at 3,895.38.
Japanese markets were closed on Tuesday for a public holiday.
On the top-tier Prime Market, the main decliners were nonferrous metal, oil and coal product and mining issues.
The U.S. dollar weakened, briefly falling to the lower 157 yen range in Tokyo, as the yen was bought on expectations that the interest rate gap between the United States and Japan would narrow. U.S. Treasury yields fell as concerns over fiscal deterioration eased amid reports of strong showings by Democrats in the U.S. elections.
The tech-heavy Nikkei index briefly plunged more than 4 percent as artificial intelligence- and semiconductor-related shares came under heavy selling pressure amid growing concerns that a Democratic sweep would lead to stricter AI regulations, dealers said.
Such policy changes could also affect Japanese companies expanding their AI businesses, dealers said.
The Democrats' stronger-than-expected showing prompted speculative selling as investors remained cautious and buying appetite was limited, said Toshikazu Horiuchi, equity strategist at IwaiCosmo Securities Co.
After the Nikkei index briefly fell more than 3,000 points and approached the psychologically important 60,000 mark, both the Nikkei and Topix pared losses as President Donald Trump said he would accept the election results and expressed willingness to work with Democrats.
Reports during Japan's public holiday that major U.S. technology companies were seeking additional funding also renewed concerns about the profitability and sustainability of such investments.

The Dollar will weaken with the tsunami of spending from the Democrats. They ran on “ Affordability “ but did not elaborate on how they were going to reduce prices other than planning on income redistribution and Medicare for all (they probably meant Medicaid for all because Medicare pays only 80%. Medicaid means welfare not a good selling point)
The American voters did what the Jihadists failed to do.
Was it Trump hatred or republicans failing to show up? We’ve never been able to carry a damaged candidate past the finish line. If there’s any good news it’s that Vivek was exposed on the state level. The rest of the candidates were JV. I can’t see any top-tier senate candidates running in ‘28. Johnson in Wisconsin will be in the minority. There will be no fight left in him. Talarico and Al Sayed got past the voters and are free for 12 years minimum.
from what i’ve seen on online Republican or conservative forums it is
1. gas prices - and inflatoin
2. irritation with Trump’s abrasive personality and his dismissing of the above
3. a feel that congress is not putting a check on #1 and #2
the hatred is on the Dem side yes.
Yep

Running on affordability was smart. Probably the key to their win.
But everything the Democrats do will make affordability a larger problem for Americans. But by now it’s too late. People may see it and they may understand that their votes made it all worse, but it won’t make a difference. The die is cast. And I don’t think we’re coming back from this.
Japanese and the gold market are excellent reflections of an economy.
“ So the Hard Left is helping crash American markets.”
At 8:50am, all the US market futures are way up, with the Dow futures up over 1000 points.
It might be time to re-allocate assets out of stocks, perhaps, after a few days.
Because it’s easy to impose Modern Monetary Theory, high wage floors, price American steel out of the market, and favour Chinese Communist Party ideals.
When you do not need to study, it’s far easier to win. They will push $25 per hour wage floors, and then what you will see a family of four will have to spend $250 for dinner. That’s outlandish, unaffordable, but is what we get with MMT in charge again. Currency devaluation is coming.
