What's happening?
Two high-speed trains have collided in Spain, causing the suspension of the line connecting Madrid to the southern Andalusia region, rail operator Adif said
At least 64 people have been killed in the crash, the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha said
The trains crashed just after 9 a.m. (0800 GMT) and the cause of the crash and full details of casualties are still being determined
It's the second major deadly train crash this year, after an accident in January between high-speed trains belonging to the same operators on the same line killed 46 people
The crash comes at a politically sensitive time for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez who called a snap election for November 29

Holy Toledo, no one check times etc etc
tried to get in before “holy Toledo” and failed. womp
Do migrants pile on top of high speed trains?
Not for long...................
Maybe just at the caboose
It's not like they had two centuries to figure it out.
What is the initial reasoning for this disaster?
I was standing on Spain’s high-speed rail platform waiting for their Barcelona-Madrid run to pick us up. Their “test train” blew through the platform first at near-full speed.
It (the noise, the push, the sudden wind blast, the shock wave from its nose) can best be described as “a 737-sized jet flying past at 150 mph, 10 feet away.”
One train was stopped on the tracks due to a signal malfunction and the 2nd one plowed into it...
The Iryo train was halted on the tracka on orders from rail infrastructure manager Adif due to a signal fault when the Renfe train crashed into it.(Reuters)

This is weird. No pop-up of a big flashing DANGER alert on someone’s computer? And this is the 2nd one to happen.

Andalus switchmen?
Two trains on the same track at the same time going in opposite directions at high speed.............
Local coverage...
Get this bit, English translation...
“...The Minister of Transport describes as “truly unbelievable” and considers it “inexplicable” that the control center ordered the train to resume its journey after a safety system failure...”

1). Running a red traffic light
or
2). Traffic light failure
“It’s the second major deadly train crash this year, after an accident in January between high-speed trains belonging to the same operators on the same line killed 46 people”
maybe the 3rd time will be the charm ...
“The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) proposed a single-track strategy for its 171-mile Central Valley segment (running from Merced through Fresno to Bakersfield) to lower upfront construction costs and launch interim service sooner.”
thus setting up scenarios for similar head-on collisions ... [the only saving grace is that there wouldn’t be very many riders onboard to get killed in such collisions.]
Was this an accident or an act of sabotage or terrorism?
The body count is now up to 64.
High tech is supposed to prevent accidents such as this from happening - but Spain is a socialist country and maybe maintenance was overlooked.
