Department of Government Efficiency Faces Supreme Court Scrutiny Over DOGE Records and $215 Billion Savings Claim

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the federal reform initiative launched by President Donald Trump and initially associated with billionaire Elon Musk, is back in the national spotlight after the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review a legal dispute over access to its government records.

The Supreme Court granted the Trump administration's petition on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, opening another chapter in a legal battle that could determine how much information the public can obtain about DOGE's operations.

The decision comes months after DOGE's temporary organization formally ended and amid growing questions about its reported federal spending cuts, workforce reductions, and handling of sensitive government information.

While the administration has promoted DOGE as an effort to eliminate waste and improve efficiency, government auditors have raised concerns about the evidence supporting some of its financial claims.

The latest development centers on a lawsuit filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a government accountability organization seeking records about DOGE's operations.

The organization argues that the U.S. DOGE Service exercised substantial independent authority over federal government activities and should therefore be subject to public records requirements under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

A federal district court previously concluded that CREW was likely to succeed in establishing that DOGE exercised sufficient independent authority to fall under the law.

Subsequent proceedings involved requests for internal documents and testimony from DOGE officials, including acting administrator Amy Gleason.

The Supreme Court intervened in June 2025 to limit parts of the discovery process. The dispute subsequently returned to the appellate courts before the administration sought another review.

Its official website reports approximately $215 billion in estimated savings from measures including contract cancellations, grant terminations, lease reductions, workforce changes, and other initiatives.

Yo, Supremes....Have a look at the Congressional Budget Office. They make unsubstantiated claims every time they chime in on saving/spending issues.

Right! If this is true- why not address Census Buereau; Dept of Labor; CIA black ops; Dept of War; Dept of Commerce; CDC (oops, it seems they are untouchable); the Federal Reserve (oops, I think that has been tried already too)

The list goes on. Bogus reporting this sounds like

Our government generally works with legislation. Spending reductions and department reductions come from recission packages. Usually the VP does some work in this area because they are usually from the legislature. Not happening in this administration.

“Yo, Supremes....Have a look at the Congressional Budget Office. They make unsubstantiated claims every time they chime in on saving/spending issues.”

EXACTLY. The ‘leftist’ leaning Congressional Budget office never saw a left spending bill that it didn’t love and made claims about how it wouldn’t cost money. Go look at what the Congressional Budge office said about Obamacare!! Ended up being at least 80% higher than expected, subsidized by cutting 720 Billion from Medicare, and 250% health care premium tax on Middle class. They did that to cover ‘40 million Americans-of about which only 10 million got insurance anyway’ of the people who essentially refused to buy health care insurance.

CBO is, was, and has been a joke for a long time. Packed with leftists that only see ‘conservative’ items as ‘unpaid’ for. When will SCOTUS go after them?

Just another example of John Thune and Mike Johnson not codifying an Executive Order which has the potential of uncovering and recovering hundred of billions if not trillions of dollars of government waste and fraud.

The government is asked to tell the government that it shouldn’t be able to audit the government.
