Argentina's Milei Making Play for Falkland Islands

Argentine President Javier Milei is escalating his country's claim to the British-controlled Falkland Islands, pledging to use diplomatic, economic, and legal pressure while announcing sanctions against companies involved in offshore oil projects near the disputed territory.

"The islands are ours, they were taken from us, and they are indispensable for Argentina in the coming decades," Milei said Thursday in a national address, reports The Wall Street Journal. "Argentina won't stand by with its arms crossed."

Milei, who refers to the archipelago by its Argentine name, the Malvinas, said his government would use all "diplomatic, economic, judicial and legal tools" to pursue Argentina's sovereignty claim.

He also pledged to build a military base in Tierra del Fuego to strengthen Argentina's presence in the South Atlantic.

"Securing our preeminence in this territory is not a political whim, it is a matter of survival," Milei said. "The Malvinas are the future, not just a question of our past."

The renewed push comes as Milei faces falling approval ratings and growing concerns about Argentina's economy ahead of next year's presidential election.

His government has balanced the budget and sharply reduced inflation, which was over 200% when Milei took office in December 2023. But the broader economy has struggled to recover, with job losses and household debt weighing on Argentines.

Milei's approval rating fell to 37% in July, according to an AtlasIntel poll for Bloomberg, among the lowest levels of his presidency.

What does Argentina need that harbor for?

I used to sympathize with the Falklands British residents. But now they will be controlled by islamists with nukes. Argentina has good reason to be concerned.

They don’t have the Navy they had back during the Falkland’s war with Argentina, nor do they have Ronald Reagan to support them.

The Argentines don't have the navy they had then, either.

I don’t think the Brits can out up a fight for them. Even if the locals prefer British rule, it doesn’t bother me if it goes to Argentina. It’s not like there are critical microchip factories there. What would either side gain by having the islands? Other than a port or airstrip?

The Falklands and all other dirt on the planet belongs to those who can take and hold it.

Nevermind, just looked it up. They’d gain access to oil reserves and fishing. Okay that makes sense. Eh still, seems better with Argentina than Britian.

I have been to Stanley. The place looks like London without the mosques or people praying on the streets.

They got their asses handed to them before. Probably will again. I guess the Argies could by drones from Iran to use against the Brits.

The US gave the Brits intelligence and access to bases. I cannot imagine us not doing that again.

“Are the Brits willing to fight for it again?”

My perception is that England is weak willed and heavily influenced by muslims who couldn’t care less about the Falkland Islands.
