Radical abortion activist Gloria Steinem, a leading feminist apologist for killing babies in abortions, died Wednesday at her home in New York City. She was 92.

A statement from her representatives said she “passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her.”

It added that “Gloria’s near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end.” No cause of death was given.

Steinem helped define the modern women’s movement and spent decades campaigning for unrestricted abortion. She co-founded Ms. magazine in 1972 as a national platform for abortion and other feminist causes, helped launch the National Women’s Political Caucus, and regularly appeared at rallies and on television to press for abortion on demand and the Equal Rights Amendment.

Her own abortion became a defining part of the story she told about her life.

In 1957, at age 22, Steinem obtained an illegal abortion in London after John Sharpe referred her for the one. She later dedicated her 2015 book My Life on the Road to Sharpe, writing that he told her: “You must promise me two things. First, you will not tell anyone my name. Second, you will do what you want to do with your life.”

Steinem continued: “Dear Dr. Sharpe, I believe you, who knew the law was unjust, would not mind if I say this so long after your death: I’ve done the best I could with my life. This book is for you.”

In a 2015 television interview, she said of the abortion: “It gave me my life. I mean, I wouldn’t have been able to live my life otherwise.”

She also stated: “Every child has a right to be born loved and wanted. And a woman who decides that this is not the moment when she can provide that for a child is making, to me, a profoundly moral decision.”

Reporting on her record has noted that she previously said women “need” to kill their babies in abortions and called abortion a “sacrament.”

Critics of her worldview have long pointed to remarks in which she described housewives as “dependent creatures who are still children…parasites.”

Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1934, Steinem first gained wide attention as a journalist, including an undercover assignment as a Playboy Bunny in 1963. She married environmentalist David Bale in 2000; he died in 2003.

She never had children of her own. She was treated for breast cancer in 1986 and later for trigeminal neuralgia.

For pro-life advocates, her legacy remains inseparable from her insistence that ending the life of her unborn child made her own life and career possible, and from decades of work to ensure that millions of babies were killed before birth
