They probably mean well – and you know what the road to h*ll is paved with – but a new move by the University of Michigan is going to backfire spectacularly because coddling young adults is never the right thing to do.
UMich recently announced that they're going all-out to "curb" mental health issues in the incoming freshmen class, and they will do that by abolishing the first-semester grades for those enrolled in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. And that's likely going to be a good number of kids in the class of 2030 because that encompasses students who have yet to pick a major.
Now, the college is parsing this much differently, claiming they will "cover" the grades from the students. The grades will still count, but the kids will never see them and they won't be a part of their first-semester GPAs.
The University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) will stop reporting traditional letter grades on first-semester transcripts for incoming freshmen beginning in Fall 2027, replacing them with “pass” or “no credit” designations as part of a pilot program aimed at reducing student stress and curbing a “mental health crisis”.
Students will still earn letter grades and receive instructor feedback in every course. However, those grades will remain internal, will not appear on official transcripts, and will not affect first-semester GPAs.

Geezer here. Uncle Sam had a program for male students when I went to university. If we didn’t complete 15 credit hours per semester (and of course an F meant 0 credits) then we might be offered an all-expenses paid trip to a tropical nation. Don’t know about mental health, but it was a mighty motivator.

They throw tantrums now if someone “disrespects their gender”? What makes you think they’d be any different in a real world setting?
LOL. Mental health issues by ass. Bad parenting issues are the problem and social contagion on the interwebs affecting weak minded children. What happened to sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me? Not to mention everyone gets a trophy and other like garbage.

They probably did a financial analysis of all freshmen staying the entire year.
Circa 1969 fall semester University of Louisiana Monroe, then Northeast Louisiana State College had no problem with not hiding my grades. The politely informed me that due to academic insufficiency I was out and gone.
5 years later I returned and did quite well with degrees in Geology, Pharmacy, and most of a degree in chemistry. Working offshore on oilfield drilling rigs will adjust your attitude.
Funny story about academic probation. When I went back to school it was during the summer session and I made the deans list. On the same day I received two letters. The first congratulated me on making the deans list. The second reminded me that I was still on probation until I completed a normal semester with good grades. I found it most amusing.
