Homeowners are being forced to tear out air conditioning from their private properties under climate laws, despite rising temperatures.
Council planning officers ordered residents to remove air-con units over fears they produce too much carbon dioxide, stating they should only be used as a “last resort”.
The net zero clampdown is part of building regulations that state “active cooling” should only ever be allowed when all other means of “passive cooling”, such as opening windows or using fans, have been exhausted.
The Tories said Britain was being “kept in the dark ages” under a net zero mindset that denies people “modern conveniences that are completely normal in other countries”.
Meanwhile, temperatures are forecast to reach as high as 40C this week, with Britain sweltering under a record heatwave that has forced schools to close, brought trains to a halt and led to the Met Office issuing a red “risk-to-life” warning.
The ‘cooling hierarchy’ Widely published advice states planning permission is not required to install air-con. However, planning is required in certain situations, such as in conservation areas, and there are different rules for flats, leasehold homes, as well as shared buildings.
It means there is a risk units are installed under the assumption they are permitted, but are later caught by council enforcement officers.
In one of a string of cases uncovered by The Telegraph, a resident living in North London was forced to “permanently remove” two air-con units from the back of their home.
Planning inspectors working for Camden council said there was “no justification” for the air-con units and that they failed to comply with the local authority’s so-called “cooling hierarchy”.
In an appeal, the resident was told to open the windows and balcony doors of their first-floor flat to ventilate the property “by natural means”.

1. You must attempt to minimise internal heat generation through energy-efficient design
2. Reduce the amount of heat entering the building in summer through orientation, shading, or reflective materials
3. Use materials that can absorb heat, like brick or concrete floors, and consider high ceilings in design
4. Use “passive” ventilation such as opening windows
5. Use “mechanical” ventilation, like air vent systems
6. Once all options are exhausted, consider air-con, but only the lowest carbon options
....and they still have the audicity to call it “Great” Britain....??!!
40C = 104F
They voted for this.
Ahhh government
Do you know what they used to light their homes before they used candles?... Light bulbs
Modify that to: Do you know what they used to cool their homes before they used fans?... Air Conditioners
Someone in Merry ole England has some major holding of deodorant manufacturers
And if you live in an old un-retrofittable building situated in the middle of the treeless urban heat island, I guess that’s just tough luck.
“and consider high ceilings in design”
Good idea. If it gets hot tonight, I’ll just raise my ceiling.
I know this isn’t discussed in thr article, but about heater usage during the winter?
I read that just a few days ago Europe was experiencing a terrible heat wave...something like 100 degrees. One thing’s for damn sure...we know that none of the country’s rich and powerful will be forced to go with A/C !
World Cup tourists can’t stop posting about America’s air conditioning and it’s hilarious
French creator @othermichaelphelps summed up the mood after arriving in Texas, joking that air conditioning deserved “a verse to your national anthem.” His videos, along with countless others from European travelers, show tourists ducking indoors after stepping into triple-digit temperatures, only to emerge as enthusiastic converts to central air. The comments are filled with fellow visitors admitting they finally understand why Americans keep sweaters in movie theaters and restaurants, even in the middle of summer.
Recently the IPCC just downgraded their climate warnings. They admitted that their predictions of global warming were unlikely. This is an admission that CO2 is not causing global warming. When are these dopes going to catch up?
quote “modern conveniences that are completely normal in other countries”
US courts have ruled that air conditioning is required for prisoners in jail.
Which means, the average EU citizen has less rights than US prisoners.
Get a portable unit that is inside the room and conceal the exhaust vents at the window with a dark screen or vent the heat outside the room into the rest of the house. A window unit is asking for trouble. Anyone with an HOA already knows…
In solidarity with the citezens, all government offices will raise their cooling thermostat to 68 degrees. (Because some animals are more equal than others)
Never heard of anything so stupid in my life, unless it is the mandated use of certain unsuitable refrigerants that they are now in common use in this country. They need to get on board with suitable people in the industry that are genuinely knowledgeable about A/C & the right refrigerants...I highly suspect from what I have learned that some serious changes need to be made. What they have done over several years (based on knowledge from people actually within the industry) is make refrigeration units more expensive & less dependable.
“net zero mindset”
Wasn’t this ridiculous effort being led by the kook, Milliband?
