Watch: Steven Spielberg Says ‘Disclosure Day’ Will Leave Christians Questioning Their Faith in God

3:06 Half a century after Steven Spielberg challenged audiences to think about what lies beyond the starry canopy that defines our universe in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the director is again challenging accepted precepts of faith and singular belief in a supreme being.

His new film Disclosure Day sees him revisit the possibility of aliens: “I absolutely think that they have been here, and they are here,” he outlined in an interview with CBS News.

First he outlined the themes behind the $115 million creation and the answers it (possibly) posed to questions of life, faith and mortality.

Other than James Carville, there are no alien life forms on this earth.

Spielberg is a little full of himself if he thinks this movie is going to raise questions that haven’t already been thought about. The theological community and religious people have known about UFOs for about 80 years now. People with deep faith have had their entire lives to reconcile the two concepts. Spielberg isn’t introducing anything new because he jazzes it up with some new special effects, Emily Blunt and Colin Firth. I’m glad you’re raising the questions, Steven, but most of us are going to enjoy your movie and aren’t going to come out of it with serious questions about our faith. We may come out of the movie with serious questions about whether you still “have it” as a movie director but not about our faith.

The guy is really his own biggest fan. The existence of extraterrestrial beings is not in any way contrary to belief in God. Maybe some aspects of a particular religion or denomination might need to be revised it doesn’t mean that Christians necessarily have to become atheists. I have read a lot of the New Testament and it doesn’t even mention extraterrestrial life. It’s mostly about being kind to your fellow humans. Maybe I didn’t read the pages about life being restricted to only one planet. Maybe extraterrestrial life was not particularly relevant to people who subsisted upon farming and fishing and making wine.

Nah…it just confirms to us that Spielberg is one of the Faustian Pact people like Bill Gates, Tim Hanks, Larry Ellison, Mark Zuckerberg, Eric Schmidt, etc.

This is a weird article. It doesn’t say much at all, or make any in-depth sense.

I’m beyond sick of the Stephen Spielbergs of this world. They are not the geniuses they think they are.

“He says the questions need answers or will Christians simply see the work as a piece of entertainment predicated on Hollywood’s self-serving need to make money while touching on personal fears.”

....aaaaaand it’s just a movie. The absolute smug arrogance as to believe he is so insightful as to upend a religion, that has existed for 2000 years, with his “superior” and “challenging” ideas.

Not one of his questions are new.

I am a product of an Italian family from NYC.
We call a spade a spade and don’t worry about manners.

Spielberg is nothing but an insulated and puffed up jackhole who thinks he’s bigger than his britches because he’s done some entertaining films and has more money than most of us put together. And because people kiss his hairy @$$.

You ever seen his daughter? Lovely testimony on what good parents he and his wife are.

To think his production of Hollywood prejudice against all things good, true, and holy will move a Christian’s faith by one millimeter is a freaking laugh.

Since he is saying this I invite ALL good people of Christian faith to skip it. Don’t give him the satisfaction or exercise in wondering how he polluted your soul.

My heritage would normally include a LOT of NY specialty words but dear old Jim fixed my manners, on this site, anyway.

Cheers :)

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. (Eph 6:12ff)

.

Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. (1 Peter 5:8b,9)

.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. The LORD said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the LORD and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” (Job 1:6-7)

“Duel” was Spielberg’s best movie, it’s been all downhill since then.

This is not a tough question really. The God of Abraham can also be the God of Mr. Zyzx from Planet Kayoz. If the “aliens” are actually demonic entities, then of course God is their God too. (unrealized of course)

Th other alternative is that one species of alien is our angels and even perhaps God—as a way to bring societal sense into our existence...

It is really not that difficult that question. What is difficult is realizing that we are not masters of our planet—that a see-able entity has greatly vast powers and technologies that currently, we can not match. That is where the feat is.

I have always believed there are other life forms swimming around this vast universe besides what we now see on earth,
and that does not change my certainty of God’s loving presence or of his power over us.

I’m not biblically articulate as some posters here, but I’ve never had a problem acknowledging the existence of both factors. I did learn early in life that I’m not going to change anyone else’s belief, or tear (what is left of) my hair out, trying to change them, nor should I. I respect others by leaving them alone on this very personal topic.

HOWEVER .. that statement coming from film director Steven Spielberg seems more like clever marketing than the pronouncements from any kind of Oracle.
