Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he thinks Russia's conflict with Ukraine is coming to an end, addressing reporters after a scaled-back military parade in Moscow marking the Soviet victory in World War Two.
"I think that the matter is coming to an end," he said, referring to the "special military operation" in Ukraine, while condemning Western support for the Kyiv government.
Russia's annual parade lacked the usual display of tanks and missiles, due to security concerns as authorities feared Ukraine might target Red Square with drones.
A last-minute ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv, brokered by US President Donald Trump, reduced the danger of any attack and the parade passed off without incident.
Putin's comments came just hours after he used his Victory Day speech to justify the war.
In that speech he said Russia was fighting a "just" war and called Ukraine an "aggressive force" that was being "armed and supported by the whole bloc of Nato".
Later, when asked at a news conference about the West helping Ukraine, Putin said: "They (West) promised assistance and then began fuelling a confrontation with Russia that continues to this day. I think that the matter is coming to an end, but it is a serious matter."

President Trump had American troops in Ukraine training them while he was arming the Ukraine armed forces, that would not necessarily be enough to stop the long range plans of the world’s second strongest army and its dictator from attempting to complete the slow invasion of his neighbor.

NATO provoked this unnecessary war. Hopefully, they have learned their lesson and won’t do it again. Putin wants to establish western Ukraine as a demilitarized buffer zone that will stop the West from further aggression. He is slow-walking the war because he wants to wear down the Ukraine military and the European warmongers. He has no plans to attack any NATO country.

The biggest irony is that in the long run, Putin has caused more damage to Russia than he has to Ukraine - he's killed off or maimed a large fraction of the younger generation, sent the educated and skilled members of the remainder scuttling for asylum elsewhere in the world, sunk the Russian economy, etc. It's probably fair to say that Putin has wreaked more havoc in Russia demographically and economically than any other man since Adolf Hitler invaded the country.
He's long past the stage of having the sense to cut his losses however, both because he lives in an information bubble + echo chamber of yes-men, and because for all his talk about Russian nationalism, in the end he only cares about one person in the country - himself.
