New Socialist Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson Laughs Off Wealth Flight
Red State ^ | May 01, 2026 | Ward Clark

Posted on 05/01/2026 2:23:47 PM PDT by Red Badger

At the end of Ayn Rand's novel, Atlas Shrugged, the main characters are in an airplane, fleeing New York City, which is undergoing an economic collapse after the left took over and all of the producers fled. As they pass over the city, the lights go out; all of them, plunging the city into darkness. One of the protagonists, railroad mogul Dagny Taggart, sees this and says, "It's the end." The main character, inventor John Galt, corrects her: "No. It's the beginning."

Seattle's new socialist mayor, Katie Wilson, seems determined to replicate the ending from Ayn Rand's novel. Her lunatic policies have all of Seattle's wealthy fleeing, and her reaction is drawing some sharp criticism; she simply says, "Bye." She may as well say "bye" to any semblance of a decent economy in Seattle.

Katie Wilson, Seattle’s new self-proclaimed socialist mayor, sparked a social media firestorm after she gave her take on reports that millionaires are fleeing Washington state due to taxes and various far-left policies.

While speaking at a forum at Seattle University earlier this month, the new Democratic mayor said, "I think the claims that millionaires are going to leave our state are like super overblown."

"And the ones that leave, like, bye," she continued, waving her hand and laughing. Though the line drew laughs and applause from those in the auditorium, it did not go over as well online, as conservatives quickly blasted the new Seattle mayor.

"Seattle's Socialist Mayor responds to exodus of wealth from Washington State by saying "BYE" ... then laughing. We're doomed," wrote Brandi Kruse.

Here, see for yourselves:

Let's face it, Seattle was doomed from the moment Katie Wilson took office on January 1st, which is, interestingly enough, the same day New York's communist Mayor Mamdani assumed that office. And, to be fair, it's not like Seattle wasn't already a mess. We travel (reluctantly) to Seattle once or twice a year so my wife can see a medical specialist there, and the city seems to be a little dirtier, a little more littered, and has a few more sprawling homeless enclaves every time. Oh, they're cleaning it up for the World Cup, but we all know that won't last.

A local news outlet, Seattle Red, at 770 AM on the radio dial, has some facts and figures from their talk show host and columnist, Jason Rantz.

A survey by the Association of Washington Businesses shouldn’t be laughed off. According to MyNorthwest, the number of businesses considering leaving Washington has nearly doubled since the millionaires’ tax was first introduced. And Washington’s housing market is already stalling, with active listings surging 29% year over year while closed sales barely moved. Experts say this is directly due to wealthy buyers disappearing from the market.

What will it take for cities like Seattle and New York to regain some sanity? Will Ayn Rand prove to have been prescient? Will Seattle have to collapse utterly before it can be saved? Will the last productive members of Seattle's economy see the lights of the city go out as they leave?

And, if so, will it be the beginning, or just the end?

One thing we can predict with great assurance is that Katie Wilson will be disastrous for Seattle's economy and for that city's residents.

She is ghoulish. Not even down to Laz's low standards.

She is beyond ugly. She is from another dimension.

She doesn’t care. As a true commie she will simply increase taxes on the middle class and destroy them. After all, the working class is far more manageable.

At the end of Ayn Rand's novel, Atlas Shrugged, the main characters are in an airplane, fleeing New York City...

I have to correct this. Dagny Taggart, Francisco d'Anconia and Ragnar Danneskjold had just rescued John Galt from the State Science Institute in New Hampshire, where he was being tortured by Floyd Ferris, Wesley Mouch and Jim Taggart. The foursome was flying over New York when the lights went out.

Before the flight to New Hampshire, Francisco had pulled Dagny out of New York as panic set in after the collapse of the Taggart Bridge across the Mississippi River at Bedford, Illinois. People were panicking in Manhattan as they headed for the tunnels and bridges exiting the island.

She’s working to turn our red states blue, I might laugh if I were her as well.

What is going to happen in this process?

I’ll tell you what is going to happen. Left wing corporations are going to move, and they are going to offer left wing relocation packages to their left wing union employees with sweet heart deals to ensure they do in fact relocate.

Seattle has a ton of leftists to spare.

So the bluehairs will move to a red state, and since the bluehairs didn’t flee blue state madness, they will keep voting blue.

Voting blue, in your lovely red state.

Katie Wilson is playing 4d chess. We are the losers.

Perhaps a conservative refugee program should be started to help conservatives move out of the blue states that are hopeless and shore up the purple states as red states - such as Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maine, New Hampshire. Is the climate so much different to move from Massachusetts to Maine or New Hampshire, for example? New York to Pennsylvania? Illinois to Wisconsin or Michigan? Eastern California to Arizona or Nevada? Virginia to North Carolina?

Just a silly brainstorm that’s probably not really realistic...could possibly net quite a few Senate seats, though, just getting 10-20K plus extra conservative/Republican voters into those states to redden them up.

Seattle’s original wealth was from lumber and fishing, and a port facility after the railroad east got there. Then there came cheap hydroelectric power, and the aluminum plants came, followed by Boeing and others. Then, by chance, Microsoft and Amazon came.

Looking now, the port is still there, electricity is expensive and companies are moving out. It will be hard to support the city on the port and the rump companies left. Microsoft and Amazon will still be there, but just for show, with most work being done elsewhere. Boeing already left, as have most of the aluminum manufacturers. Fishing and lumber are still there, but greatly reduced. You can only go so far with coffee and camping equipment.

It will be a good place after it goes through a Detroit-like collapse and recovery if you can handle 5 months of cloudy, cool drizzle. I liked it when I lived there 45 years ago, and maybe it will be nice once again.
