Secretary of War Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum directing military installation commanders to allow War Department personnel — namely, uniformed service members — to request to carry privately owned firearms while in their nonofficial duty capacity on DOW property within the United States.
"Before today, it was virtually impossible … for War Department personnel to get permission to carry and store their own personal weapons aligned with the state laws where we operate our installations. … Well, that's no longer," Hegseth said during a social media video released today.
"The memo I'm signing today directs installation commanders to allow requests for personal protection — to carry a privately owned firearm — with the presumption that it is necessary for personal protection," he continued.
At the video's outset, Hegseth said the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment applies to all Americans, including those in uniform.
"The War Department's uniformed service members are trained at the highest and unwavering standards. These warfighters — entrusted with the safety of our nation — are no less entitled to exercise their God-given right to keep and bear arms than any other American," Hegseth said.
He then cited several active-shooter incidents on U.S. military installations in recent years as examples of when personnel having the ability to return fire on the threat could potentially have reduced the human damage inflicted.

Long overdue.
Security/military police? I dunno. I’d say E-6 and above only. They got too much to lose if they screw up. The Ft. Hood fella mighta been stopped.
Those ‘sleepers’ will be pissed.
I would like to see this expanded to include military retirees who have a CCP as well.

Sadly, the installation commanders will use malicious compliance and throw shitloads of adminstrative garbage in the way to make this impractical .
I have watched them pull this crap for decades, they will drag their feet because they are risk averse
It would be nice if DoW Hegseth breaks the code on this and forces them to comply, but I have seen this game before
And get swiftly kicked put by Hegseth.
I would love to see the peckerheads hemmed up for being stupid
Here’s hoping
There's a problem. They should not have to request to carry.

“The memo also makes clear that, when considering personal carry applications, permitting officials must apply “a presumption of approval.”
“If a request is for some reason denied, the reason for that denial will be in writing and will explain — in detail — the basis for that [decision],” Hegseth said.
agreed
Great news.
‘ Those ‘sleepers’ will be pissed.’
Or rejoicing. They’re sleepers after all.
All good
I am cautiously optimistic
And hope you’re right
Will these servicemen and women carry these weapons while performing their duties. Will aviation mechanics, cooks, office personnel, radar technicians... be armed? Will they need to show skill level with their weapon. And are all military members really fully trained in the use of firearms? What is the level of firearms training at Great Lakes or Lackland ? My best friend and neighbor received very minimal training at Great Lakes during Vietnam.
Why should those who serve in the military not have the same 2nd Amendment rights as civilians?

I would volunteer to help with the qualification range. The absolute worst folks to handle a weapon and to qualify were the JAG officers.
