Why Mamdani's 'warmth of collectivism' is a myth
American Thinker ^ | 01/21/2026 | D. Parker

There are just two basic ideologies: Right-wing individualism and left-wing collectivism, and only one works; the other kills people.

John Stossel's latest video exposes the false promise of "the warmth of collectivism" from New York's new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, by simply examining its failures over the centuries.

This is important because it always seems like young leftists harbor the rather bizarre belief that no one has thought of this idea before, that making things 'fair' would simply entail redistributing the wealth, and everyone would live happily ever after.

That the basic concepts of collectivism are somehow 'something new' that they alone have suddenly discovered in their fevered dreams of youth.

This is why it's important to know these facts and prevent new generations from making the same dreadful mistakes.

There are those around the world who wonder what will happen when collectivism reaches our shores.

The sad state of the government indoctrination centers (schools) means they don't realize that the ideology's modern version (at least that of the last 500 years) originated here in the "literal" sense with the word Utopia, as the title of St. Thomas More's book from 1516 that envisioned a collectivist 'paradise' on a mythical island chain off the North American continent.

The first failed experiments in collectivism took place in the first English-speaking colonies of the Americas 400 years ago.  As well as the first failed experiments attached to the word 'socialism' that took place 200 years ago in 1825.  The astonishing fact is that collectivism has always been here and intertwined in our history.

The warmth comes from its proximity to the Hell Fires.

Calling it individualism vs collectivism is misleading.

There is nothing at all wrong with free individuals voluntary coming together and working towards common goals.

It’s called freedom of association, and it’s as important an individual right as any.

The problem with left wing collectivism is that it’s forced. It’s control through groups that you are not free to leave.

The “warmth of collectivism”:
“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”

A myth? No. Do not dignify it by referring to it as a myth.

At best, one might call it a fiction.

Leftists are primarily vulnerable on the basic history of collectivism...

Yep...And how about the fact that folks, with half a brain, don't dig bustin' their a$$ so others can sit on theirs.

Yeah socialist mob mentality, thats the first thing that I think of when it comes to the “warmth of collectivism”

And from this we also know why women love socialism as a group, so much more than men.

Doing a good job conditioning folks to obey their command and control economy.

As a Boomer, I and my classmates were taught all about the dangers of communism (collectivism) starting about 5th or 6th grade, and that was in So Calif schools. That the education system has morphed into an ideology that now espouses collectivism with all of its fallacy is a national shame.

Very well put.

People gather all on their own around family, religion, business, common interests in whatever (sports, leisure, etc).

The “warmth of collectivism” of coerced.

We shall see how far his self defined minority status (he’s a white heterosexual middle aged male), fake smile, and warm and fuzzy speeches take him.
